Enlightened Equitation Teachers - page three

Simon Hewitt EET (Level One)

Simon is not from a horsey background but was very keen, starting riding as a 5th birthday present. Simon began his teaching career at the same riding school where he rode as a child, working weekends and then full time after he left college.

During college, BTEC national diploma in applied science and animal management, Simon had a placement at Asoka Classical Stud. Whilst there he had the opportunity to see how the horses were trained using clicker training and classical dressage.

Simon was a working pupil at Suzanne’s Riding School with Julian Marczak for seven months. He then bought himself two Lusitano x Warmblood foals - Dori and Urial. The following winter Simon went down to Devon as a working pupil for Heather and afterwards commenced training for his ABRS exams. His ‘foals’ are now 4 year olds and are coming back into work after backing. He intends to do a bit of everything with them but would particularly like to do some doma vaquera and garrocha work . At least once a year Simon has lessons with Janine Pendelbury on her Lusitanos and he will continue progressing through the EE Levels.

Simon is based in Lancashire and can be contacted on igabk@yahoo.com.

Nicola Luke EET (Level One)

Nicola started her affair with horses at the age of 6 and got her first pony at the age of 8, complete with membership of the local pony club. She followed the usual training programme, through pony club tests then BHS stages at Bishop Burton College. Nicola competed successfully BSJA and has worked for dealers, mostly with difficult horses. She has groomed for several show jumpers, helping with schooling, bringing on youngsters and has also worked with the local RDA.

Throughout her training she struggled to accept some of the ideas and the logic behind some of the reasons she was given. This started a search for the way forward, including spending 5 days on a RWYM course and attending too many demonstrations to mention. Taking time off to start a family two years ago led to her discovery of Heather Moffett, through a 2 day simulator course, where she discovered what she had been searching for.

At present her best horses are in foal so she is concentrating on freelance teaching, especially lessons to beginners, but enjoys teaching anyone with an open mind and considers the interests of the horse.

She is based in West Yorkshire and willing to travel within a reasonable distance, her partner Mark is at present training to be a barefoot trimmer. Nicola can be via the forum under the username 'nicjenpat'.

Maria Carlton EET (Level One)

Maria is another EE Teacher who has been horse mad from an early age. She first came across Enlightened Equitation in the early 90s when Heather wrote a series of articles for Riding Magazine. She was fortunate enough to get a place on a riding course with Heather shortly afterwards and the rest, as they say, is history.

The Enlightened Equitation riding techniques were a revelation and Maria is keen to share them with anyway who wants to learn better and more effective techniques. She is committed to establishing sound foundations for the novice or more experienced rider to build on during their own equestrian journeys.

Her passion for horses and riding has always had to fit round study or work, so she's sympathetic to the situation of working or hobby riders. Instructors that have made a major contribution to Maria's own equestrian journey are Cora Roberts, Phil Bennett, Tim Brier, Heather Moffett and Liz Deen-Sly.

Maria has a soft spot for the unconventional dressage horse. She is owned by a heavyweight cob mare and yes - hairy cobs can do dressage, even if they do prefer jumping. Maria is based in Kent and can be contacted on maria_carlton@yahoo.co.uk.
