Fid Set

You need a special fid set for doublebraid, not the one called a Swedish Fid set.  The fids have to be slightly smaller than the rope you are splicing, so you need a set that copes with the different thicknesses of rope you are going to splice.

I use 12mm for long lines at 30ft, 14mm for a 24ft in-hand line, and 16mm for a 12ft short in-hand line.

Any heavier and my shoulders ache using them.  I have never tried a halter though, you would probably need something thinner for this.

Ps.  HH I have been looking for the instructions, think they are on the PC at work, I will dig them out.

Yep, see link above.

You can get them cheaper than this, look for when they aren't on buy it now.  Think I paid about £20 something.

Tracey

Ps. You also need some sailors needles and some whipping cord.  If you are doing ropes the lead rope carabina type clips are good.

Pps.  Also look out for rock climbers and tree surgeons old doublebraid rope on Ebay, they have to get rid when they are slightly doubtful about a rope, but it's great for horses as it's not such a life and death situation, plus we tend to need shorter runs so you can cut out any dodgy bits.

Ppps.  I don't have a rope fetish, honest!

Pppps.  If you don't fancy making them up yourself a ships chandlery or boat yard will often do it for you, they charge per metre of rope then for each splice.

This is the link I have for making a rope halter, without the Fiador knots :

http://www.naturalhorsesupply.com/tiehalter.shtml

How to make the Fiador knot : http://www.goddijn.com/halter/

Now for splicing I have find the guide on Samson website :

http://www.samsonrope.com/home/recmarine/splicing/index.cfm

I do not like halter with the Fiador knot. I had a the halter that had stretched and because of the Fiador knot, I could not change it.

I prefer to make using the halter with the other knot, it is simple to undo and re-do.
