I haven't seen one in real life but it looks awfully thin.  I would think that it could do some serious rubbing.  It's not something that I would buy.

Get one or two books - Knots for Horsemen and/or Bridles Plaited and Plain, both by Ron Edwards, Ramskull Press - for FULL instructions on how to make your own bridles and headstalls bitted and bitless from leather, lacing and rope ...MUCH nicer and MUCH cheaper, and even fumble-fingers here can follow Ron's instructions!

At a pinch if you can't get them in the UK I could get them sent over. DON'T buy them off ebay, someone advertises them at $15 +p&p; they actually cost $10 max.

ive looked at these a few times, my strong cob doesnt like the squuzing action of the dr cook and such, and he will pull through it, but will a rope halter he is fine, becuase it is alot thinner and the signals are clearer, so for a horse like him i think it would be good for, my tb is very sinsitive tho and she would need a wide leather band.
i think with this sidepull it will be easier to turn, ive got a rope sidepull and it ca be hard to turn him (especially if his head is in a bush greeting another horse  rolleyes )

Thanks HH, I'll have a search and see if I can find them, if not I may take you up on your king offer.

I did wonder if perhaps they were to thin and if the knots might prove uncomfy, but I can see the clear signal point as well, really what to try one, and see.

Making one should be fun, I'm famous in my own lunch time for my thingy making expertise. Thanks all.

I have different colours (and styles!) for every day of the week ... the early ones weren't too clever but I reused the rope once I had got the hang of it. I have just sent off for a set of rope-splicing implements - "fids" - as I would like to interweave the ropes for decoration on the browbands, and make neat eyes on rein-ends. My sister thought I was mad until I made her a bridle and now she has taken it up herself; she made her OH's granddaughter's pony a bridle in all the shades of pink and blue and lilac she could get, and sewed twinkly crystal beads to it!

I've not seen it myself - just heard about it and the joy it caused (and the swearing that went on when the beads were being sewn on with fishing line). I was also told about the riot in the chandlery when my sister asked whether Dylon would work on their best marine braid.

I get all my braid-on-braid rope/cord (sometimes called doublebraid) from Ebay, I also got my Fid set from there as well.  It comes in various thicknesses, normally white with a choice of coloured fleck.

HH the guy I bought my first set from sent me a colour presentation with easy to follow instructions for the various different splices you can do with the fids, would you like a copy?

I think the sidepull does look a bit cheese wire like, but I guess it's all in the way that you use it!!
