Question For Pierre

Hello,
I was just reviewing the videos of your riding on your website with the lovely bouncy warmblood
The second one (with you in the burgundy shirt) shows the horse in passage against the mirror, whereupon, towards the end of the short side you pat your horse and then lift up your hands twice in succession. Then you proceed forward in a faster rhythm in extended trot. Could you explain why you lift up your hands?
It looks as though you are doing this because the horse is momentarily trying to evade by becoming too deep. If so, was your decision to proceed in extended trot as a result of this evasion, or had previously already planned the passage-extended trot transition?
Cheers,
Roz-the-analyst!

Hi Roz,
If Pierre isnt around, I can answer this one for you. The horse is one Pierre is trying in Germany for a client, and he hadnt ever ridden it before, so is doing just what I would also have done for a horse going too deep- lifting the hands, and backing up with the leg.
Cant answer for him about the decision to go to extended trot though- Pierre, over to you when you are there!!

Well after I did pat the horse, he took the opportunity to dive with his shoulders, so I did a french half-halt to rebalance him and teaching him to carry himself.
I was trying a horse for a client and it was the first time I was riding this horse. I t was not appropriate for me to fix or train the horse. I was just trying to feel the potential of the horse

What is a 'french half halt' - different from other varieties?

Yes it is.
When you do a french Half-halt you do it by moving one or both hands in a vertical way from low to high followed by an immediate return to a low position of the hands.
The key is never to pull backward and to make sure that the horse is not loosing any impulsion.

In portugal we half halt the same way. And I really must have looked funny after arriving in the US and asked for a half halt and then told them not to pull lol cause is really got them confused.
