Well lets deal with the short arms first folks!!

Short arms make it more difficult to have your hands low, without ending up straightening and therefore locking, the elbows. This makes it difficult to adjust the height of the reins at various stages in training, or even in a schooling session, without the rider having to lean slightly forwards from the hip, to ensure the bend in the elbow, which is essential for the rider to have an 'elastic' contact.

Roz, you are absolutely right- some video clips! I will try to get this organised as soon as possible- great idea!! Probably wont be until I get back from Oz, but (verbally  rolleyes ) kick me up the backside to get it done when I get back, please!!

Michaela, but short arms are actually the biggest conformation problem. Er....... you dont have these too do you?

Well ... they are in proportion to my short body, certainly ... but my hands don't hang at the level of my waist, or anything ...

[Jane - do I know you? I rode at the Erik clinic in December and also did an Arrow refresher weekend with Sue and Phillipa a couple of weeks before. You just sound familiar so I thought I might know you.

Hi Ros

Yes - I was on the Arrow refresher and we went to dinner together on the Sat night! (Dark hair and glasses!!)

See you at the next Erik clinic in March?

Well, for me its a tricky question. Im only just starting to be influenced, I have only just found that other people (a large group of you guys :P ) share my ideals on equitation, and the end result that I would love to achieve.

On the path to... a different sort of training shall we say, I must say Heather, just because her book has really made my bum itchy.. hm sounds dodgy eh?!?! in the sence that I just want to get on a horse and try it all out. Its made me really excited about the fact that I may actually be able to get off this blasted plateux that Im stuck on, and I might be able to get somewhere with my riding Cheesy

Just inspired to keep riding... the horses, definately the horses! They give you so much, they can teach you so much, not only about riding, but about yourself to Cheesy

Heya,

Yep, I remember - I replied properly in the 'audit' thread in the 'General' section. I'll see you for the Erik clinic in March though by the sounds of it :-)

Who do you feel has influenced and inspired you the most in the quest to become a classical rider?
Pure and simply - my horse Genie.

It's because of her, I found:

Heather, the equisimulator and the correct way to ride,
barefoot (and the friends I've made through it),
treeless,
Classical Riding.

But more simple than that, I've found me.  Sounds profound, but if anyone has read Linda Kohanov's books will know what I'm on about!

Oooh, another vote for Sue Nevill Parker & Erik Herbermann.  She's a new discovery for me and I am so pleased (and grateful) that I've found her.  I'll be at the Herbermann talk in March, first time I've attended one of the events and hope to be at least one of the clinic days.

Horse sense - something that horses have that stops them betting on humans.

In my opinion, a horse is the animal to have. 1100 pounds of raw muscle, power, grace, and sweat between your legs - it's something you just can't get from a pet hamster.

My dear Meg started the ball rolling to get me interested in classical riding, it being the only sensible way to try to turn a hollow little orange hottie into the gorgeous well muscled girl she became, bless her, with only the rather poor assistance of a greenie rider.

My first whiff of classical training came from a lady called Diana Strachan, who was involved with the TTT. Years spent regularly visiting Portugal for lessons have been a huge influence although the tendency for many Portuguese to sit with a hollow back and therefore incomplete access to their lumbar backs started to niggle. One can't help but wonder if that's where Sylvia Loch developed her three point seat idea. Of late, Charles and the TTT have been a big influence, but the biggest influence of all is Jas - top trainer extraordinaire!

Of all the riders at the TTT, the only one I really believe to be the living embodiment of what is taught there is Murphy, a truly exquisite presence on a horse. The fact that he rides Lusos is of course a bonus, and I wish there were more of them at the TTT.
