HI, everyone:

I found a few video clips online that I would love to get some experienced opinions on, but I just don't know if it's appropriate to post a link to someone's website and then ask for critiques.  The video clips show a man riding a horse in piaffe, passage, etc.   I'd love to know what some of you think of the horse's performance.  Would this be alright?

Who is the rider? Is it you, or someone who you have asked permission? Im not really qualified to say, seeing as im new here  wink but im sure you could post vids of your own riding.

Oh, no, it's not me.  It's a rider who is unknown to me, who has the video clips posted on  his website.   So the video clips are open to public consumption already, but I would provide the link to it.

My goal is to get some classically trained people here to tell me what they see in the horse who is performing piaffe, passage, canter pirouette, etc.   I'm curious if my interpretation of what I see would be the same as that of a person with some real knowledge of classical training.

Absolutely!  I'd love to know what people think of the gray horse in most of the clips (not his conformation, but his performance).

Here's the link:

the levade is nice ,the piaffe is ok but lacking cadence a bit ,the passage is full of resistence and the pirroutte mediocre the piaffe ends up better in the clip where he does the jambette. He is very mediocre in general

Thanks, Michael.  And what do you think about the constant lip smacking thing that he's doing in every clip?  My first assumption is that it's tension, and isn't tension supposed to be released before a horse can perform admirably?  Is there any chance that he is showing some sort of concentration or something other than tension in his mouth?  I'd love to know what  you think about that.

I have to agree here. The in the passage the horse looks very tense around the jaw and that tail is swishing like mad. In some places it looks like the rider is sawing the horse's head from side to side but difficult to tell, the video was a bit blurry. It also looked a bit hurried. In the pirouette the canter looked four time to me and very flat, there was just no 'jump' in the canter at all, it certainly didn't look like a pirouette canter to me, it looked like it had been slowed rather than collected, there was no impulsion at all. I'm no expert though but that's what it looked like to me.

Edited for spelling  rolleyes

The thing that disturbed me was the horse's mouth, working all the time like it is.  It actually looks like he's  wiggling his lips the entire time, but the clips aren't very clear.   I don't think I've ever seen a horse work its mouth (or lips)  in quite that way before.   Very distracting.

If it's a sign of tension, then maybe that's the reason that no one is very impressed with his performance.

Hi Jennifer,

It is very common in Iberian horses, and even seems in those countries, to be seen as desirable. Even Nuno Oliveira's horses champed at the bit a lot, on the videos I have of him, but it looked more like concentration than distress, I have to say.
