Those Lesley Thiel paintings are seriously good. I love drawing but I can't paint at all so am in awe of anyone who can use colour like that.

Yes she is wonderfully talented, I love all her work.
I have always drawn and done a bit of painting, but I cant capture the spirit of a creature, that is a special talent.
I do tree's they dont have much in the way of spirit!..

I love pictures of trees but I find them really dull to draw! Animals are my thing too, but mainly monochromatic.

The Lesley Thiel paintings are wonderful, too.
I have a photo of a Mawari stallion just on the upward curve of what's going to be an enormous buck that I love. Would make a fantastic painting. I could only ever do line drawings - add colour and it all went wrong, so always hats off to those who can use colour effectively.

Thanks I thought I would struggle with colour and was scared to have a go at it to begin with :roll eyes: but its been ok actually. There are obviously many more variations possible with colour but I find that the work I did understanding and seeing value in graphite has really helped me-I always think in value first. Another useful tool to help get your head round colour is to use the colour picker on PS, I never copy it as I don't think that would work but it helps to get your eye into seeing colours that your brain is tricked by such as the colours in shade especially. Would love to see the pic Crdodgeon if you don't mind sharing?

I'll see if I can share it via this link - it's by an American photographer who's based over here called Dale Durfee (I had a complete blank on her name yesterday) http://www.daledurfee.com/greetingcards/large-1.htmlObviously tinted, but a fabulous picture.

Lovely photo thanks I stalk a few photographers on FB The problem is as an artist you need their written permission to use a photo and some won't give it , which is fair enough as its their art . Also there are sometimes problems with the copyright having been already sold or them being unable to get permission from the horse owners etc. But Im pretty lucky in that I have several great photographers willing to let me use their work, just as well as I am useless with a camera

I know -I hadn't even thought about getting permission to use photographs to draw from until recently. Some photographers post a few photos as 'stock' which can be used to create art, but it's hard finding ones that have enough detail.
I'm quite precise so drawing suits me, which is another reason I've always shied away from colour -if I try to do watercolours in a 'loose' style then it just doesn't work. I have got myself a really decent set of coloured pencils (ouch -not cheap!) so I'm experimenting with them at the moment.

Yes, that's a pain (obviously necessary for the photographers). With something like the Mawari pic, I'd thought of it as being something I might one day try and work on. If it's for one's own use, then I guess it's less of an issue.
