That "first wag" is lovely thumbs

An ex colleague's son once rescued a little JRT from gypsies (they threatened to drown it if he didn't buy it from them).  It was in a bad way; it had had its tail cut off at the base, and its paw pads were burnt/corroded from hot tarmac. Obviously it took a while to get it back to some semblance of physical health, let alone mental health, and at work we eagerly awaited the daily updates at teabreak time. After a few weeks Julie happily reported that apparently the previous night the puckered stump which was all that remained of the tail had been seen twitching from side to side, in the poignant semblance of a wag  cry wub.

Ok bawling into my porridge  cry

One of our old Rottie girls Leyna was that scared, only she never fought - she was too shut down even for that. cry She was like a quiet little ghost who just hunched herself in the corner and pretended she didn't actually exist. Screwing her eyes shut and almost trying to climb into herself if approached.

For us the breakthrough when she learned to play with us. Many, many tears of joy that day

I see it all the time.

As a dog trainer for the past 35 years, I have seen dogs that are over the top happy and easy to get on with, but on the other side there are the shut down, scared [for whatever reason ] ones who need time and loads of care, and thought to work with.

Yes that first wag, is wonderful, it touches your heart.

Due to my work with the donkeys, I am acquainted with several animal welfare organisations here in the country.

The reality for many cats and dogs is grusome; abandonment, ill treatment, neglect, torture even. Then there are those who are daily PTS at dog pounds under very stressful conditions.

All my dogs have been rescued off the street or taken from a dog pound.

My latest addition was Sushi. I adopted recently an elderly collie, found by animal lovers in the north of the country, who was so weak that he could no longer walk.

He recovered partly, enough to lead a normal life. Sushi has arthritis, and he sustains a pelvic injury (perhaps he was run over by a car).
He is very shy and quiet... very seldom I see him wagging his tail.

If we all adopted dogs on death row, our small gestures could meake the difference between life and death for many animals.
