i have to say it looks quite peculiar, like a cross between a racing saddle and something else. how would a half tree work.

How would a half tree work? It doesnt. It was a particular hate of Barrie Swain, he abhored them as they are more prone to pulling down either side of the wither if they have points, and are the main cause of atrophy in racehorses as their saddles mostly have half trees. sad
