Not sure if this is in the right place...

I'm still very new to finding out about classical riding, but am really enjoying finding out more, especially about in hand work.  Tried to order the Oliver Hilberger book that has been recommended, but amazon are temporarily out of stock  sad

So while I am waiting I wondered whether I could ask you all for your thoughts on what basic in hand work you think it's best to start with, what are the benefits (especially in relation to riding) and any tips/advice around getting started.

Thanks  Smiley

Well, I was new to inhand work last spring, and I got brave enough to post some videos of me doing inhand work. I think they are on about Page 4 of my blog - lots of self-critiquing by me and some comments from others. These videos might be useful as they show what you might expect doing intro walk work as a newbie (and possible mistakes, plus what I did correctly), rather than being videos of someone who is a zillions steps ahead doing high level piaffe work inhand etc.!!

I used the Hilberger book and it will be good once you can get it.

Thanks Naiad, your vids are really helpful - it's always good to watch others and I had a read of your blog too - hope you don't mind  Embarrassed  (not all of it, just a few pages...)

It's true about their being very little on you tube showing others doing it so this was great to see  thumbs

Go ahead and read away all that you like!! It is there for member viewing and hopefully someone can learn something from my ramblings - I tend to write a lot!! The blog just gets a bit sad in recent months when I've been struggling with serious lameness issues for Amigo.

Richard Hinrichs video on In hand work is also invaluable, Wes.

Sorry to be a bit late coming to this thread. I should look here more often  Embarrassed Embarrassed Embarrassed

A short video you might find interesting, I'm sure Heather wont mind, of her working a young green horse (with minimal leg yeild and absolutely no previous experience of proper lateral work) in hand. This was filmed at a lecture demo near Southampton a year or so ago and the two of them have only just met.
