Agreed though that varying the circle and moving 1/4's in and out, shoulders in and out etc would take you to the next step. As he starts to work on smaller circles he will naturally start to take balance back and neck up. You could use reinback into trot and giravolta in to trot, both really help in my experience (but you may well do this already).
