I would like to read up on clicker training and am looking for a book for an absolute beginner.  I've looked on Amazon but am a bit overwhelmed by the choice. Any suggestions?

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Clicker-Training-Horse-Alexandra-Kurland/dp/1890948357/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1294928125&sr=1-1

books by Alexandra Kurland are good books.  She does a step by step one too which is good.

Thank you!  That was the book I was drawn towards so it's great to get a positive recommendation.  It's now on my birthday wishlist.....and I'll buy it if no-one takes the hint. rolleyes

DVD is a good idea - I didn't think of that.  Will go research.

An excellent book which isn't specifically clicker but does look at the basics of learning theory is Emma Lethbridge's 'Knowing Your Horse' which is available from Amazon  thumbs

It has a great mix of theoretical explanation and practical application (and some lovely neds too  whistle ).  I would recommend it to anyone who has anything to do with horses as it goes through the different things that we do and explains how and why they work and the pros

Ben Hart is another one which is a good read (he also has a website if you do a google).

I would also recommend books by Karen Pryor, 'Don't Shoot the Dog' is a good one to start out with.

Of course you can also ask questions on the clicker board on here, quite a few of us use it and come at it from different angles (I don't use Alexandra Kurland so much but do use a bit of Ben's stuff and a lot of Emma's).

There are some more links to books/resources here:

You need to join to view the thread but it's free to join and also on the same forum links to a couple of online magazines:

I'd opt for one of Alex Kurland's books too, but I'd go to her website www.theclickercenter.com and order one of the "Click that Teaches" series, as they are so very thorough and well thought out.

http://www.smaarthorses.co.uk/

These people sell the AK books and DVDs in the UK.

I like the AK book.    I have Ben Hart's too which is interesting, but left me feeling like I shouldn't try clicker as I wasn't good enough, not sure why.. cc_confused     Very informative book though and well written.

I've also got the "teach your horse to do anything" book by Shawna somebody and that was good, although haven't read a great deal of that one - have looked at the pictures!!  Embarrassed laugh

I did find the one DVD that I have watched by AK, borrowed from someone, very informative
