Sometimes on YouTube etc. you see horses in (non-passage) trot - medium trot etc. - with this really exaggerated springiness/elevation with their leg action.

I have generally thought that Amigo has a somewhat more "level" non-springy trot compared to the horses you see in these types of amateur videos. But when I saw the Spanish Riding School in Vienna, while their horses in early training had very nice leg action, they were not displaying that exaggerated springiness that I've seen in those youtube videos.

Are these different styles of medium trot a breed difference thing - or is this a stage of training thing - or is it a training difference and a difference in goals ? Is it the fashion in competitive dressage to have a really springy exaggerated medium type trot etc. or why do I often see videos of this?

Not sure if this question makes sense, but it is just something that I have been thinking about.

A lot is down to the breeding, Yvonne, although the very springy collected trot which at one time would have been marked down as 'passagey' but now seems to be de rigeur in higher level tests, is also termed the 'show trot'.

Passagey trot stil marked down in tests Heather  wink  Diane taught Pascal a more passagey trot a while back and the judges didn't like it at all.
A horse will develop his/her trot and start to come up through the shoulder as their training progresses Naiad, you can see it really well in these two vids of the beautiful Zaire, the first being when he was younger:
