rolleyes well im hoping that the ice will have cleared at the yard this afternoon, this is the first chance ive got to ride this week, as i work full time!

so im off with  my head full of stuff and ideas for a good schooling session! toddy will probly have other ideas   but heres hoping.

My aim for today is to get him soft in the jaw, and hopefully do some nice circle work without him leaning on my left hands! anything else will be a bonus  Cheesy if i mange to crack this two reins lark

ultimately i would like to be able to ride him so he is soft in his jaw working thru properly - which we have never manged!! huh

ooooh i'll be riding Carlos tomorrow so i'll have a go with crossing my reins.  Thanks for the advice - hopefully i'll feel safe enough to rely on just the snaffle rein more.  (Psychological thing).

Sorry to steal your thread Joy

Carlos - no worries, you can hijack my thread anytime! just nice to talk with people who have the same interests  Cheesy

im relatively confident on a snaffe in the school, its when we go off hacking we have problems, he forgets his manners and runs thru bits, so im hoping the pelham will work for the school & for fast hacks - hes not the same pony as you would remember him to be! hes got loads faster an even more of an attitude now  wink

Ah but i bet he's still a sweety pie and really cute (major soft spot for Cremello ponies Cheesy ).

As much as i used to love a full bucking fitting gallop on Carlos (should have been a stunt horse and me a stunt rider) - it's nice when you are able to stop where you want to.

Lems got faster as he got older - he started to run through bits - very difficult to handle (he was 13.2 cremello and 22 years of age-for other peeps).  I didn't change him to a pelham - i put him in a hackamore for hacking out in the end. (must be the colour!!!!)

Schooling was such a problem with him as his neck was so set in 'the riding school' way it took me months to ask him to flex correctly and even then he could only do it for a few minutes as it really did take it out of him.

You'll both get it - just takes time - just enjoy him.

It's nice to know you are both okay.

well the schooling went out of the window Friday & Saturday too,  rolleyes the school was so boggy Todd decided all he was interested in was sidestepping the huge puddles & deep boggy patches.  Although we did manage some walk trot & canter.  Was very pleased with his responsiveness too, in fact at one point i only thought trot when in canter & trot we did  Cheesy

Sunday i decided to go for a mad hack with my friends, in the past we have had major problems with Todd deciding to tuck his head down to his knees & tank off with me!

we found a new bridle path this time which we tacked on to one of our other rides! and he was a lil star! in fact from a flat out gallop we went back to steady canter and back to trot (at the end of the field) all i did was drop the reins and pat his neck. awww lil love  B) he seems to really like his pelham too, he mouthed & foamed soo much, never known him to really mouth or foam up on a bit, he'd foamed so much it was being blown away by the wind!

we had one lipizzaner impression cause he thought the others were going without him! i.e. airs above the ground & canter passage   but he didn't pull his head about or fight me i just merely sat there closed my legs around him, said NO and tried to remember how to use my retarding aid too  rolleyes

the only problem i had was he was walking along lovely with his head & jaw relaxed, although no where near working on the vertical   but when i asked for trot, his head would pop up, i tired to squeeze alternately on the reins, and eventually he would lower slightly - im hoping this would could with time

BUT ON THE WHOLE IM  Cheesy very happy, ive never know him seem so happy & content in a bit before! and i seem to be coping fine now with the extra set of reins! although the girls did have to wait once or twice for me to gather them up after gates etc., before bombing off at a gallop    rolleyes

I was having a thick moment and sat and looked at the title of this thread for several minutes thinking....."Don't people normally ride with two reins.....a right one and a left one"....before I cottoned on to the fact that you meant two pairs of reins.Derrrrrrrr. Sorry. I know this is not contributing anything to the discussion, but I thought I would share it with you.

Joy

I'm so so pleased for you and Toddy    :P

Funny actually Carlos gave me a wonderful canter on Sunday it was great no bucking at all.

All in all a great weekend for us both.  Keep up the good work mate.

It must be something to do with Cremello's Lems never ever foamed at the mouth and he always tanked off-head between his knees.  I just wish i could have ridden him more the EE way and changed his bit to a pelham.
