Short question about reins

Suppose you have the reins so that the horse is in contact - how much extra rein length should there be beyond where you are holding the reins?
My current reins are too short, and I need to get some new ones. I don't seem to have enough extra rein to really let Amigo have a really long low stretch and even at free walk, there is not really enough extra rein. Regular reins are 54 inches, and I guess he needs oversized ones which are 60 inches I think? I am trying to figure out if 60 inches will be long enough.

I have a pair of 60 inch reins, they were made for a 17 hand TB with a long neck and he could stretch down nicely in them. I find them very useful for in-hand work too.

I had a pair of 60" reins for my last horse when she was young (16.3hh long rangy horse) and they were more than long enough in fact they got too long once she was more 'together'.
I couldnt imagine needing any longer than that for any horse

Seems that Amigo being 17 2 hh and long-necked might well need the 60 inches then. At the very least, if I want to try inhand work, I will need them this long for Amigo.

If reins are too short, they are a nightmare, Yvonne!
Moving this to riding forum, as it is really more a topic for that than general.
