Ive been wondering how to get over the saddle slipping problem, and then eureka. I remembered that in the loft id got a bareback pad id bought years ago from robinsons.

Anyhow I took it and tried it on jim this morning, just walk and a bit of trot, then a couple of little circles, ''it stayed put''   thumbs thumbs no slipping, and for the first time ever I was able to ride him without migrating west.
BUT
The girthing system is awful, the buckles dont hold the girth strap in place 'they come undone', and the stirrups are a western style that are very narrow. The webbing stirrup straps have huge buckles that dig into your legs, because there isn't a saddle flap to protect the legs. Really its not much good for anything really other than a stop gap.
SO   I took it to my saddler and asked him to think of a way of making it usable. This is the solution he's come up with.
He's going to remove the webbing girthing system, put on 2 large D rings one at each side and fit proper leather girth straps. Then he's going to make me a pair of short stirrup leathers with running keepers that will hold the leathers in place and stop them coming undone. Ill use a pair of safety stirrups [ I must have some somewhere]
its going to be ready on Saturday.....And then off we go. How exciting....

We had a good laugh about my balance, he said that by the time jim is a 'normal' width and able to be fitted with a made saddle, ill have the most wonderful balance. whistle or ill end up on my head!....

The things we have to do.

Its great. It doesn't slip or slide. Im sure that the fhoenix will be great once we have him better muscled up. Until then this pad will allow me to school him without having the saddle slip about.

Dont do rising trot if you use stirrups with a bareback pad though Penny. It will put a lot of pressure on the back as they are not meant for use with stirrups, except to rest the feet in!

The Fhoenix shouldnt slip- were you using it with a Professionals Choice girth?

Heather yes its the girth that came with the saddle from Anna.

To the fhoenix I have added a slice, or 1/2 a kneeling pad to the 'envelope' that is between the saddle and the padded underside which seems to be slightly better, but the saddle is still slipping over to the left.
I had my lesson using it today and it was alright until we cantered, then we went west. Its really frustrating and maddening, as well as it being awful for the poor pony to constantly having to be pulled up so that I can jiggle the saddle.
As for the bareback pad, its interesting what you say about not using it for trotting using stirrups Heather. These pads are sold with western style stirrups!.

Me being a pest again. But im loosing the will to live now.

Ive been reading about the smart panel and wonder if it would be something that would help us.
I feel as though the fhoenix is high enough off the ponies back, so I wonder if the smartpanel would raise me up even higher, when I feel that something closer fitting and with longer flaps would stop the saddle sliding about??
[ which is why I went to the bareback pad] Any advice before I order one.
