haven't read thru all the replies (sorry), have you had his teeth checked?  just a thought wink
i can't say enough positive things about the hanging cheek snaffle thumbs.  worth a try if things don't work out with this bit?
also, balance (or lack of) might cause a horse to do what you describe.  sometimes slowing them down to a 'granny trot' heps Smiley.

hmm... i only ever knew one trotter and he had the most unbalanced canter i've ever seen. If he's so soft in the mouth I'm thinking his lack of balance is stopping you from being as soft in his mouth as he's used to. Or maybe it's other way around, it's the oversensitivity that's causing him to evade and by consequence loose his balance. Have you tried loosing contact for a while to see if he stops evading like in trot? (if you think it's safe) if he does, it's just a contact problem, if not, it's lack of balance.

As others said, when it's just a bad habit the baucher works wonders, but if it's lack of balance it won't do squat, only training.

Another update with good and bad news!!

I rode him at the local club field where he is usually quite onward bound and a friend fitted at market harbourer (sp?) he went really well in it with the myler in. He tried to evade with lifting nose up the MH stopped him and he just came back down and looked a littlepuzzled then worked really well, into the bit, and balanced in canter! Fab sorted!

Decided to try some jumping Tuesday night, first time on him and a good 2 years since doing jumping. I was rather over zelous in my forward position over a jump, on him landing I landed on his neck, nothing to get hold of to recover and came off :-(

I am currently in hospital from Tuesday night waiting for an operation for my broken leg!! Spiral fracture to the tibia involving the ankle joint so a complicated repair job needed. Operation can't be done till next Tuesday so bit of a wait :-(  cry

So horsey will be getting an easy ride of it for quite a while till I am fixed. Boo hoo! But on the positive side the market harbourer thingy worked wonders and it was him correcting himself!

Now got my laptop in hospital so at least I am back online!! yahoo

Thank you for well wishes! I am positive because my horse worked so well before my accident and we ended on a good note! Will be worrying the nearer we get to the operation on Tuesday. Now got my laptop in hospital so I am searching all I can on spiral fractures and healing time.

For a trotter he does have a good canter he prefers canter to trot. He's is odd like that! In my first ever dressage test we entered at A in canter as he is just so wanting speed!!

Yes please Sue! It was very interesting how quickly he gave up the giraffe thing and worked really well! He was just trying it on and had picked up quickly that if he did that with his head he could do just about what he wanted. It wasn't the bit, although the action started by not liking the bit, but transfered to the bits he did like.

Never used the MH before or even thought about it till someone who had the same problem mentioned it. She now only occationally has to use it.
