Hmmmm, leg yield backwards.....?  I would think that would be incorrect as it would put the legs crossing behind each other rather than in front, and isn't crossing behind a no-no?

At Manuel Trigo's second 1st level Lightness clinic this last weekend, which I audited, I saw him asking the riders to reinback in a circle around the pillars, and then in a figure eight through them, but I didn't catch what the reasoning was...I'll ask him and will report back to you on his answer.  It could be for separation of the aids.  Interesting topic.

I couldn't do a circle backwards to save my life on G'Donya years and years ago, and when I tried it last night on Comet, he did it really pretty well, considering his straight reinback sucks...!

And still no photos from the first clinic.

Exactly why it can be problematic Christina, it's only helpful going backwards if you use it as a benefit not an avoidance and going back on curves can allow them to sing their own tune  whistle. Not suggesting you were.
Hope to see pics soon  thumbs

I also do rein back on curved lines- it really engages the haunches. Another exercise that Lucy Rees told me to really engage the haunches is rein back up a hill/slope.

Why not to do lateral work backwards. Horses donīt like to move backwards in freedom wink. Really nod backing is fine gymnastic; with bending even better. I think itīs the same work in the weight bearing legs and back both forwards and backwards.
Waiting interesting pics after making progress to trot and canter laugh

Interesting to find this topic, as this morning when I went to feed Jensen he did a rein back in SI... He's been taught to always back off my space when I go to feed, and wait politely until I've put the bowl down; normally he'll back up straight but he was half watching me, half watching a mare in the next field so ended up in SI going back  laugh so can't even argue that lateral work backwards is an unnatural movement that a horse would never do loose in the field!  Really looking forward to seeing vids of lateral work backwards done ridden... Nutcase, Lippa? Absolutely, but a creative nutcase  nod. How about LY or SI backwards on a circle?

As to backing up on curved lines... done in-hand, Alex K has it as one of the foundation lessons that every horse should know, as it gives you the ability to maneuver the shoulders & haunches.

I 'think' Alex did ask horses on a clinic I watched a year or so ago to rein-back in SI - its a 'reset' and initially is a couple of steps of RB and then a rockback before walking back on again.

....of course I may be going nuts!

Awwww thanks Heather - he sure is a character & I love him to bits! You'll need to come back to meet him  Cheesy!

The reset Alex normally uses is what she calls "hip-shoulder-shoulder", which is basically disengagement of hips followed by couple of steps of reinback - a slightly different thing from rein back in SI. I don't think she uses rein back in SI, but someone correct me if I'm wrong?!
