From HFL-

Just Say YES! Taine and Lesage 1932 Olympics

and also this! Note Schaukel and ?square? arena with no letters. Apparently the test was a 16min demonstration of paces and movements....I think you can read it  in an appendix in Niggli's book
lesage et taine jo 1932 dressage

hope these work!

ps.......I think we need to remember viewing these that these horses were military.....and their training and work were more akin to todays' event horses (still called 'military' on the continent)

Really enjoyed watching those! Amazing footage from 1932, and the horses were trained for the military!

And the Cadre Noir are still training the cavalry type horse, even to do the airs with gallic panache! Not clockwork robot perfect, sometimes show a mind of their own, but personally I LIKE that in a horse! Selle Francaise are just my kind of horse (what are they..TB x Arab x Normandy Trotter x???)...anyhow, oh and I spent a glorious week the other year at Saumur, late September for the CDI**. We'd booked a Performance, earl in the week (not too many of them thru the year)  and went every day for free thu'out the competition. Even the Gala Evening was free, and such a treat!
There were uniformed competitors at the CDI**, not just the CD but also the Guarde National(sp?). Amongst the few competitors to have heels rather than toes down, to sit quietly, to allow the horses some head movement....and they were 'not rewarded'. A lovely week of horses, chateaux, gardens, hills, rivers, food and wine. Thoroughly recommended holiday...we stayed in a mini chateau up river at Beaumont(?) run by an irish couple who cooked fresh soda bread for brekkie. YUM!
This wonderful slideshow of the CD at some grand performance somewhere brings it all back!

Hi Heather,

I hadnt realised that the footage of Taine and Lesage was on youtube these days. Nadja posted it on HFL a couple of years ago. Very, very different to the dressage of today.

EE member, Mandy pointed me to a debate on British Dressage forum a couple of days ago, with one of our GP riders being pretty scathing of Nuno Oliveira. How attitudes do change. I sent the link to my former trainer, Dr Margaret Cox, and I am hoping she is going to come back with a typically erudite response, which if so, I will ask if I may post here!
