Been a while since I posted on this board so  wave again!

For those who don't know me I own Xita, Rija's daughter. I found out in the summer that she is not a registered luso as I thought, but that both parents are. Rija has been graded since she was born so I could register her part-bred.

However I was going to go out on a limb and contact her Sire's owner to see whether he has now graded the stallion and if not whether he would consider it.

What does anyone think? Is that completely wierd?

Here is the stallion http://far.alterreal.pt/STUD/Desc.asp?Recno=59347

I've got the name but that's it. I also don't know any Portuguese!

Anyone have any suggestions?

Definitely, try Maria, Pumba. I saw Xita in Portugal as a yearling before she came over!

Hi,
exactly what have you got in mind as regards contacting the breeder?

Also, I am puzzled. Why do you say/what made you think that such particular stallion is Xita's sire?
You are welcome to pm me.

Thanks for the replies everyone  Cheesy

I've just gone by the stallion and person name in her passport Chapsi, but maybe Portuguese passports aren't the same as British ones?

As I say I would like to ask if this stallion is now graded, and if not if he would consider having it done. A picture of the stallion would also be nice!

No decent recent pics Helen, the snow ones could be anyone! Best ones are still the HT from September

Your best bet is to contact the APSL.  nod
They'll be able to tell you whether or not the stallion is graded, as all gradings are centralised at their offices.

Besides, horses tend to pass hands very quickly and often, when stallions are graded, they tend to be taken by their owners. Most studs sell horses by the age 3-4, only keeping the best for themselves.

Are you aware of the procedure to register a PSL offspring?

Thank you very much, that's very helpful  Cheesy I have sent them an email to the address on the website but it bounced so I guess it's snail mail!

I'm not aware of the procedure no. I didn't even realise I hadn't bought a 'proper' luso, that's the extent of my ignorance! I somehow assumed that a horse with a lusitano passport with two parents that both have lusitano by their names would somehow mean the offspring was. I now know better!

Both parents have to be graded.
You can have a technically Luso born to PSL parents, but if one of them isn't graded, then the offspring will be legible just for Part-Bred registration.

Why don't you try ringing the APSL offices? They should be able to speak good English.

It's the same with PRE. It was during a conversation about my PRE, Spirit, that Pumba realised the problem with Xita's registration. I was explaining to her that, although Spirit is a well bred, completely pure bred and registered PRE, she isn't graded so if I bred a foal from her even with a purebred graded PRE stallion, the off spring would still only be part-bred even though they would be as spanish as the next horse. If Spirit passes grading, her off spring can be PRE. I know it is to preserve the quality but it isn't always clear to newcomers to the breeds.  sad Whatever happens, Xita is gorgeous.  wub

Thanks guys. Yes, it was Helen taking me through one of her passports in words of one syllable that meant I looked at Xita's and realised. As Rija is now graded I am hoping the stallion has been (although unlikely as the scores don't appear online) and if not I was hoping, extremely optimistically, that the owner would consider doing it if I paid costs.

I know it's longer than a extraordinarily long shot, but it's worth a try!

And yes, it's confusing to a newcomer. With warmbloods you just need proven parentage.

I think you'll probably need blood samples from Xita, Rija and the sire too to check they match. Life is so complicated.  sad
