Any cavesson imo should be as loose as possible but tight enough that it doesnt slip.
As far as I could make out the Wels and the SRS are more or less the same although I dont know of a UK stockist for the Wels now as the previous one has stopped stocking it.
Free work thats most important is simply control work so that once out of the small area you have control with your body language rather than the line,so you need to be able to control the size of circle, the speed and of course halt, you can add SI and change within the circle if you like.
I do most of it ala Klaus ( some good pics etc in his first book and vids ) but very simply you stay behind the shoulder to drive,go right behind ( but still to the inside) to make a tiny circle, walk backwards making an obvious gesture with your hip away from the horse to ask him to come in/change within the circle/halt.Slow the speed with the same hip action and also your own energy etc.
I use a 11-12m square roped off area within the school initially with the horse free, then add a loose line over his neck then finally you move onto work on the cavesson and can develop losgelessenheit.

Lovely, thanks Sarah Smiley  Will dig out his book again. Smiley  Really like the idea of training first loose.

Re cavessons - the two others that are linked, and the one HH has - do they have the same level of padding over the nose?  If not, I think a small loan might be needed for a rather naughty purchase. Smiley

I've decided to get one when I can too ... I saw them at the SRS @ Wembley and loved them then (and the bridle, headcollar, gloves ...).  Following this thread is so bad for my purse  ouch

How do you find they fit?  I'm having a hell of a job getting any info out of them with regards to sizings.  All they said was that the headpiece is 42" but I'm more interested in the cavesson part and suspect that I'd be better with the larger size.

Haha! I know,I went on their site and spent hundreds, thankfully I didnt check out  laugh laugh
I have the standard size which fits B and also Sam ( Lippi) havent tried it on anything else yet but would agree that its the width of the nosepiece that would make you go up a size as theres a lot of adjustment elsewhere.

OK, just had an email to say that the cavessons are out of stock for around 3 weeks.  So... I thought I could use that time to find a great alternative.  So, HH, the one you have, is it as well padded as the SRS one?  If I cannot find anything else then the SRS one will do  rolleyes  laugh

I have the SRS gloves, they are lush.  But all handmade so quite a variation in sizing, you need to visit the shop in Vienna and try them on in order to get the right size.   nod laugh  I have an in hand whip too which I quite like.

Phil (non horsey hubby) suggested I buy a shabrack with rider stripes on it - I burst out laughing and said I would look like a right idiot riding round with that behind my saddle, PMSL!!!   laugh laugh laugh

hh's from schockemoehle

Not quite so naughty as the SRS beauty, but I *might* be tempted to lunge again. (won't use my old grot equipment...i'm better off riding and doing the wee bit of in-hand i've been taught)

I think a schabrack is what the Germans call a saddlecloth  -  but I could be wrong  Smiley

The SRS use them in their performance outfits.  It's that bit that looks like a saddlecloth, but it actually sits just behind the saddle and buckles onto the D rings.  You know, the red ones with one gold stripe for an assistant rider, two for a rider and three for a chief rider.  You would look like a real kn0b putting one on your non-SRS Lipizzaner's saddle and ponsing around as if you were an SRS rider!   laugh
