So so sorry, you must feel dreadful - but he's running free now.
Try not to feel guilty, horses manage to do stupid things regardless of the best of care. At least he was loved and happy with you for his sadly short life.

Liz,
I know how you must be feeling right now. Over the years, I've had horses getting into terrible accidents and 2 years ago we lost Magic, an elderly donkey as a result of a freak, pointless accident.
On all those accounts I felt terribly guilty and I blamed myself for not having prevented it.
The reality, is that animals can do silly things and we cannot be with them *all* the time.
Try not to be so hard on yourself...
