I know, and you are entitled to your opinions  wink

But even something as simple as taping off a corner of the school - some horses would just run through it, I personally would not be happy with that as a barrier for a completely uneducated horse.  I have visions of horses running round with electric tape and jump wings or whatever trailing behind them....  Until you know the horse respects things like that, I just won't bother!

I did tape an end of the school off when I started riding Gazdag, so I had 20m x 20m, instead of 20m x 60m, just in case of sudden brake failure, he had less room to build up speed!  But that was a pain, even on a small yard, people would get fed up with my barrier, even when I coiled it up and left it all tidy in the middle.  There were only about three people other than me using the arena too!

And on the yard before that, where I did all the basic lunging before backing - they *hated* electric tape there, they were the most arsey and difficult YO's in the world, and ran a busy riding school and comp yard.  The smallest school was 20m x 60m, the rest were massive competition surfaces, so again, it goes back to using the best method with what you have available.  There were times when I had to work my horse in the mahoosive jumping arena, round the jumps, no possible way I would have been allowed to move jumps or anything to make a pen.

Anyway, I am just using my experiences as an example to demonstrate that it's not always quite as simple as we would like.  I think tolerance to each other's situations whilst striving for the ideal is A Good Thing.  wink

Damn you, you have drawn me into a debate when I am supposed to be doing accounts, raising invoices and organising a conference!  Too busy, too busy, I am off...   laugh

Thanks for that Hilary- I think what was most striking for me, was Panda and her blind owner, walking in perfect step and harmony, and a dog and owner walking, with owner being completely towed by the dog!!

Yes,fair points,I guess I forget what a pita YOs and other liveries can be-as Trudi mentions some dont even allow loose work/lungeing because of damaging the surface.
Off to watch the vid now.  Smiley

How would you go about repairing a damaged back Lippa? wastage is not so bad as the muscle can build fairly quickly when things are put right again, but what about actual deep damage to the muscle?

Klaus prefers the square pen to the round as it allows the horse to turn away-but most stables here have neither which is why the tape is useful-its affordable to the average owner whereas a roundpen is expensive.

we have a square pen and it was as cheap as chips to make and took half a day to make using, wooden stakes all chopped from the surrounding woods and then made like normal but high fencing.  Use a long piece of thick rope for the door(on 2 levels of course, otherwise my horse would duck under for some grass!).  Made on normal ground though so obviously not functional when the very wet, like now  wallbash
