I would like to know more about clicker training in dogs and horses. Any books I should read or website "explaining it all"  Cheesy  My trainer uses treats as a reward, and she has very good results. But I think it is a crude form of the proper cliker training.

I would like to know more to be able to carry on with Linda in our little sessions.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Muriel

Of course, when we will be back to England, which mauybe next year (Hoorrah  Cheesy ) I will take the course with Becky!

I think some of the best books you can buy on the subject are as follows:

- You can train your horse to do anything! On Target Training: clicker training and beyond by Shawna & Vinton Karrasch

- Clicker Training by Alexandra Kurland

These can be ordered from Amazon.

and of course, you'll need a 'clicker' to give the bridge-signals and in some cases ou may choose to use a 'target' (which you can make yourself).

Chapsi, is it true that a stick, something like bird cage perch size, with a tennis ball on top makes a good target? or any other suggestions please.

Thanks Chapsi, I have ordered the books.

Do you mind to explain what a target is?

Thanks

My target was made by Nix. It's a plain small plastic water bottle, wrapped in bright sticky tape. It can be attached to a wooden stick or used like this.

After a lot of reading ( still more books awaiting delivery) and downloading stuff from websites, I'm going to try clicker training my house rabbit before I let myself loose on Denny the donkey.
Reading about it has opened my eyes that what I have seen as "demos" has NOT been what it was purported to be, and I think that proper operant conditioning may be just the thing to break through asinus' ( and mulis) continual questions of "why?",  which many caballus people interpret as stubborness.
However, given their quick and somewhat devious ( in the nicest possible way of course!) minds, I think I need to learn with something less unforgiving - hence Mr Rabbit! Although I see on the Bailey website that they have used chickens for years so if Mr Rabbit proves difficult, I may just get a chook.
Wish me luck - or rather wish Mr Rabbit luck!

hinnyheart - on the yahoo clickryder list there are several people using clicker training with mules and donkeys. I am really curious about the results of your rabbit experiment, please keep us posted!

This list is an amazing source of learning altough be warned, there are a lot of posts and it soon becomes quite addictive!  Cheesy

I'm waiting for a mail delivery before the clicker itself actually arrives so I've been making use of the time by seeing how greedy each of them are for a range of different treats.

Mr Rabbit is not keen on carrot or apple, but loves a slice of banana. However he goes ballistic over fingernail-sized pieces of certain types of dried fruit rolls.

Denny likes banana, apple and carrot equally - she seems to suck on banana slices! - but will follow me around for teaspoonfuls of breakfast muesli.

The delivery is promised next week.

Thanks for the link. I'll take a look.

Despite the fact that it has 'cremebrulee' in the address Cheesy  Cheesy , I find this to have some pretty interesting articles.
