Used to do this Ages ago when I had my TB and an elderly Heinz although elderly he was still doing 5 hours a week and thriving off it but school didn't always mean I had time to do everything and give both an hours work.
But 1st time thought I'd lead the old boy and ride the TB, as the TB was a hot headed moron felt like I needed all the control on him.... Wrong! got about 1/2 a mile and swopped over lol thankfully 1 saddle did both so a quick change about and rode the old boy and lead my monster who then behaved inpecably... must have been ponied when he was racing I reckoned.
But do try it at home don't do what I did in my daft teens and just jump on and head out to see what happens!!

I only once managed to get myself wrapped round a tree (literally!) when they each decided to go different ways.

I bet the pones in question plotted that maneouvre for miles beforehand!!!  laugh

Maybe a last recommendation when practising is avoid all areas with trees!!!!  Cheesy

hmmm. well after this thread last week I tried it again. really not a good idea with my two! started off in the paddock-it was ok, went down towards woods (we dont have much choice seeing as I wanted to avoid road) and they were a bit full of it. thought I'd have a trot to 'settle' them  laugh baaad move-turns out Noddy has a ground eating pony trot whereas when V gets excited he goes into full knees-in-his-chin-Iberian mode! went back into walk but Nods was thoroughly excited by this stage and stood there bucking and head tossing before trying to charge off in front of Vico. I had to let go, get off and lead them both back  rolleyes

I ride and lead lots spec in winter. As for bits a straight bar happy mouth seems to do the job. Nice and mild and does not turn in the mouth. I have two of differing paces and  I ride the slower one. She will slow down to his pace but she hates him dawdling along behind. I agree about high viz for the ridden horse and rider but boots tail band and bridle kit for the led one, a rug tends to slip back or flap up and is a pain in the proverbial! If you do need to use the road take ownership of your patch. You are as wide as a car and less manoeverable so be polite but firm. I use reins threaded through the bit and ALWAYS lead on the inside.
Keep it short and slow initially and somebody on the ground to start with is always a good move. Keep your elbows by your sides, one hand per horse and steer with your legs and seat. Lastly, smile breathe and ENJOY!!!!
