Ah, its probably that his mind isnt quite on the job then jes when out hacking- that is much more likely!I confess that I doubt very much whether I could just get a nice halt from a bum squeeze, out hunting, not that I hunt anymore!- but you get my drift? Cheesy

try training the rein lift-it can be useful when they are like this.
Also, when you are on a contact really focus on the seat being connected to the hands-dont use the hands to halt without the seat.
Short asks are better than pulling too ( not suggesting you are pulling!)
For emergency situations it could be worth training the one rein stop? If its trained softly and gently in the school its not as harsh in an emergency.
How about CT?
Just a few suggestions. Smiley

Thanks, you've given me a few things to think about.  Really appreciate it.

Had a really rubbish ride on Sat tbh, felt out of control, which was part of the reason for the 'schooling' hack on Sunday.
Also, when you are on a contact really focus on the seat being connected to the hands-dont use the hands to halt without the seat.

This really makes sense to me.

Just bought Ben Hart's Clicker Training for Horse too, so we'll be practising CT at the weekend (if I can get to the yard with all this snow!)

I think thats a great idea Jes!
I train youngsters to halt from a click really early on,Ive always done it even before I knew about CT and its very reliable as long as you establish well enough that it becomes an automatic response.
