EET Emma Lethbridge has written a fantastic new book, called 'Knowing Your Horse'. More about it when I have finished reading it, but having read the first eight chapters now, it is a book about equine behaviour/human interaction with the horse, ( Emma, can you sum that up in a better way) that should be read by all riders and horse owners, not to mention  exam candidates. Although science based, it is very reader friendly for the layperson.

We will be stocking it in the shop for certain, once published,  and I will write a proper review when I have had a chance to print it off and read it really properly, as I tend to go a bit boss eyed reading it on the PC!! But from the chapters I have read so far, Emma should be very proud of herself!!! thumbs

You will enjoy it, that is for sure, folks!! You know me, I wont put my name to anything unless I really rate it extremely highly, and I truly think this is a book that is right up there at the top!

Thanks Heather, I am so pleased that you have enjoyed reading it. I know that you have incredibly high standards, as such I am very complemented by your comments and grateful for your support. I hope that others enjoy it as much as you as I feel contained with in the book is an important message which has been invaluable for me in my work with horses, and has allowed me to have the privilage of cultivating fantastic relationships with the equine species.

The key message of the book is that for training to be both highly effective and hold the horse's welfare paramount a knowledge of how the horse learns and applies that learnt knowledge to his environment is crucial. Although the book has it's basis in science the information and practical techniques within the book are written for equine community, whether that be a happy hacker or regular competitor, anyone who simply wants a contented and productive relationship with their horse.

A description of the book and chapter headings can be found at http://eu.wiley.com/WileyCDA/WileyTitle/productCd-1405191643.html or on amazon.

Part of the description from the back cover -

'If you understand how your horse learns and why your training is effective, you can train faster, more ethically, and more sympathetically. Knowing Your Horse will be a key resource if you want to better understand your horse’s behaviour and make the most of that understanding to improve your training techniques.

Knowing Your Horse gives you a range of practical tools to employ in solving equine behaviour problems, and training tasks and case studies demonstrate these tools in use. Emma Lethbridge thoroughly but simply explains learning theory as applied to horses, and offers practical advice on reward systems, positive and negative reinforcement, and overcoming fears and phobias. If it’s not horses but humans that are causing you problems in training, this book will also help you to explain the concepts to other people. Learning recaps offer quick summaries and training logs are provided for your own training notes.'

thumbs  Definately one I'll be ordering.

I always value your input on EE, Emma.  It's so useful to have a perspective that places the horse's welfare first but is based on sound behaviourial science!

If you search 'Knowing Your Horse' on Amazon or on Wiley/Blackwells website it will come up. You can also search for my name. It's only available on preorder at the moment, it will be out in May.
