Equine Behaviourist - Bristol area??
«

Can anyone recommend an equine behaviourist in the bristol/bath/wilts/glos area? Not someone that has studied a technique (i.e. IH, Parelli) but an actual behaviourist?
Thanks,
Gemma

It depends on what sort of thing you are looking for really, but I would highly recommend Sarah Fisher or Tina Constance who are in Bath. They specialise in TTOUCH and TTEAM and are based in Bath. If you google Tilley Farm you will find them.
ps I would personally highly recommend them!

hmm yeah, i know of sarah - she did a lot of work at horseworld where i used to work.
has she actually studied equine behaviour? the probs i'm having with my older mare and seperation issues from her 7yr daughter are getting worse, and i was advised i need to get help from a behaviourist and not someone that does a technique.
would tteam help with this?

It would certainly be worth a chat with her to see if she could help - I know it can help lots of issues. I know it is a technique but it is very much about improving the horses confidence about itself and its environment, and its own body awareness. I should imagine if you have worked at Horseworld and seen her you know most of this already!

There is someone else in Swansea called Jenni Nellist who does horse behaviour. I don't know her personally so cannot comment on what she does!
Her contact details are: Vale Behaviour. 26 Llewellyn Road, Penllergaer, Swansea, SA4 9BB. Telephone: 07974 569407
Jenni is one of the resident experts on Natural Horse People so you could also contact her via here and see if she could help you without committing yourself.

thanks, i actually found that website last night while looking! i thought what a great site, then got really excited when i saw the contact address as bristol (!!) but then realised that was the site owner, not the behaviourist :(
i wasn't sure when someone advised me i need a behaviourist who can actually tell me why the horse is doing what's she's doing, as that's all very well, but afterwards i would need a technique to work through the problem.
thanks again
will look into sarah and jenni.

I've met Jenni and watched her doing a clicker training demo with her horse. Can't claim to have actually used her as an animal behaviourist but from the chats I had with her she certainly seemed very very pleasant and knowledgeable

Gemma pm Kassidy on here she is an animal behaviourist, even so she is not in your area as such, I know she does go down south sometimes she should be able to help you in one way or another

I third Kassidy, she came down to see one of my share horses and gave me a really detailed insight into why she was behaving the way she was and formed a great plan for how to help her (just before the owner decided to sell her... :( )

What about contacting the Natural Animal Centre run by Ross and Heather Simpson. I think they are based in Wales but I should think they would have a list of people who have studied with them. I used to enjoy reading their articles in Equi-Ads.

Hi Gemma ,
Don't know if you have sorted your problems out now or not .I know several people that have done the NAC courses and they seem to be very knowledgeable people.
However the only person I could personally recommend from extensive contact with my own horses is Ben Hart .His web site is
www.hartshorsemanship.com
if you want to take a look.He is one of the few people in the country that doesn't push a certain technique as such but would take you through in detail how different techniques would work on your horse and help you to find your own path in dealing with your problems. He does promote positive training and sometimes clicker training but not always .He travels throughout the Uk and internationally so I am sure you could get him to come to you.He also has a book coming out in September that may be of help to you also ?
If you want to Pm me feel free.
Good luck
Rachel

hi rachel
thanks for the info on ben - i have heard of him, and will look out for his book!
jenni nellist came out in the end - i would highly recommend her, as like you say about ben, she does not promote a certain technique, but actually explains the "science" why a horse is behaving the way it does, and advises the best approaches to get through those problems.
she is very, very knowledgable - not just about behaviour! - she comes bristol way nearly every week, so if anyone else is looking for someone do get in touch with her!
