Donkey Man and myself have just to had to pay 50€ for a broodjenny... her story is somewhat disturbing...  :'(

We've already seen ths jenny on occasions. She was a broodjenny for local farmers... foal after foal, year after year... the latest we heard is that she was lame (please read laminitic)and she would be ours, providing she was barren.

Diogo had a strong feeling today and he decided to visit the animal. He met a 2-3 month pregnant jenny, confirmed laminitic and covered in mange...  :( AND, the meat man was there too to take her to the zoo as lion feed... :'( The timing couldn't have been better...
We had to pay 50€ for her... but neither of us could not let this sweet soul and her unborn foal be taken for meat...
Life is precious and I believe in God's mercy.

Now, my point is, what to do, in order to treat a laminitic animal throughout pregnancy and how to treat her mange without hurting the baby (chemicals for mange are rather nocive)??? Undecided Ideas? Suggestions??

Our vet is rather concerned...  :( But what could we do????

I can't believe people can be so heartless, after this little donkey served her owners all her life... HOW??? broodmare machine... despite laminitis... nearly sold to the zoo... despite pregnant...  wallbash

Why? Why, oh why? I became involved with these donkeys for love and compassion, but it's taking a lot of me...  :(

Now we have another delicate case, and it will cost a lot on vet bills...  Undecided Our only consolation is that we rescued another donkey just in time and next year we'll expect our first donkey foal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! wub

Would anybody like to 'adopt' this jenny, in order to help towards her transport and vet bills??? Most appreciated...  notworthy
International adoptions are £25 (due to sterling pound devaluation) or 30€ and can be made to our  PayPal account as follows:

Me too!

Maria I'll see what my vets suggest and look into alternative treatments for the mange.

I will send a donation. Will homeopathy help with mange?  I could  ring Crossgates and ask?

Maria, you really are giving a lot of yourself right now.

Don't think that this has gone unnoticed.  The one thing I would ask you to do is to try and pace yourself.

The sad fact is that you cannot save them all.  For this jenny you have been an angel and there is no doubting that she deserves it.

Just make sure you look after yourself too during all this, so that you can continue this good work that seems to pull you deeper and deeper in.

:'(  For this jenny.  I cannot do another adoption right now but I promise that at the EE conference I will participate in any activity towards the cause.  Including the simulators.  I am definitely doing a simulator session... at least one!  If they can fit me in I will do two or three.

My mother in law has just passed away and we have loads of bandages and dressings/pads(unused of course) would these be suitable to send to you for the Donkeys.

My YO had a load when she went into the nursing home because the NHS just chuck them away

Id also like to adopt a donkey but will have to sort all out after the funeral which is tomorrow

Thank You Everybody...  hug Thank You for the adoption, donation and offrs to post medication and equipment.

I went to visit the jenny on Wednesday after work. This is how I found her... she looked sweet but very sad and it moved me...  :(
Then I realised that she must be moved asap... flies are causing her great discomfort...  sick01

First sightings

She has a very kind eye

Skin lesions, due to mange…

She can’t put her foot down for a couple of months now… we all suspect she is laminitic; after all she has been fed on corn all-grain. Vet will tell. Fingers crossed…

But worse of all is this huge open wound in her belly, infested with a swarm of flies… I felt sick

Soon as I get her back to the shelter and we get the vet, I'll let you know what he says.

In case she is laminitic, would it be fair to pursue with her gestation???  Undecided

Ah she looks so sweet. I just can't believe people could treat their animals in this way. censored

I was thinking, pig oil and sulphur might be an option for the mange. It works wonders on cobs' feathers where they have mites. They are also a mange mite - although a different type I think. The oil drowns the mites and the sulphur prevents infection.

I get mine from http://www.matthewburks.co.uk/. Why not email them - they are everso helpful and knowledgeable.

Oh Maria, she has such a beautiful kind face.

I can't tell you how much I admire you but it must take so much from you emotionally to deal with this.

I'll also add a small donation.  Just wish it was more.

How's the little Jenny doing Maria?

She is utterly adorable!  Thank goodness she had two wonderful Angels to save her!

Hi Jane and everybody!

I was going to do an update soon with some photos, but you beat me up to it.
We collected Tricana (that´s her name) on Saturday, after an eventful day... rolleyes
She was very lame, very itchy and her wounds was fested with flies. She moved with severe difficulty and her owner coaxed by slapping hr in her legs with a rope... that's how donkeys are handled by their farming owners.

While I was waiting for the owner to bring her out of the field, Diogo had gone into the farmer's house and he took a long time...  rolleyes 'Men', I thought... I was starting to feel annoyd with the waiting, when suddenly I watched a group of people in the far distance, and DM was following behind with a stupid  Cheesy on his face as he turned to me, bringing another geriatric donkey along...
 ohmy I thought...
...So, there we were, in an old bashed cattle lorry, loaned by our farming landlord, already with Gaiato on (who had been taken to a wedding that morning 200km away), loading two new donkeys, without having our quaranteene facilty prepared.
But time was urging; we had to make the most of it from having the old lorry that day; we had to get to this jenny before the knacker got hold of her, and then Diogo was given this other ancient donkey, who would go for the zoo as well, if we didn't take him here and there  :(.

In short, we left the farmyard with one donkey that morning - Gaiato - and we returned with three. The farmer rofl when he saw us arriving back; "the miracle of the multiplication of donkeys", he said laugh

Now we have another resident. Carocho, a big, strong, shaggy brown donkey, in his thirties, with a very strong personality. Carocho is filthy, his hooves look like satelite dishes, all cracked due to over-growth and he is rather thin. He also eats very slowly. In short, another case for the vet; he needs dental work, trimming and to attend to his skin, as well as getting dewormed.
His photos will follow shortly.  wub
But hell! when we let them out, Duende, the little Miranda colt (who is waiting for the vet to come and geld him  devil) was a right nuissance, mounting the new pregnant jenny and chasing off Carocho. We had so much fun, running after donkeys and imposing our authority and discipline! Great  rolleyes! So much fun we had that day!  angry

To make things worse, Magic developed a foot abscess, and he also became rather ill and weak, probably with the discomfort and pain. He is nearly 40 and despite being on bute, he kept lying down, as if giving up living, and his body temperature was dropping. We had to rug him (Thank You Maggie!  notworthy) and in one of the most critical nights Diogo was up with him, feeding him titbits every hour and helping him to stand whenever he got restless... it was freezing cold, there was no light in the shed and there were RATS crawling over DM's legs...  sick01

Anyway, update on all our adventures. Success!  yahoo
Carocho and Tricana are now settled into the herd, and Magic pulled through and he is looking perky again. Tricana's fested wound is closing and she hasn't laminitis; she is still lame, but I think it's her knee joint. Smiley
Now we are still waiting for the vet to come, who will be leaving on holiday tomorrow...  blink

But it's times like these that make us keep going and gain a strong sense of fulfillment and purpose in our lives as fellow humans, knowing that all the effort, all the sacrifice is well worth. At the end of the day, we may have rescued just a few old donkeys, but we are giving them these living creatures the remaining days of their existance the best times ever. Our facilities are far from the ideal, but are well cared for and much loved.  wub

And, without the support of this board and the warming, encouraging words things would be even more difficult. There are times when we feel worn out and dishearted, but your caring, and encouraging words give us new strength.
Thank You!  hug

Maria you are doing such sterling work, but please be careful you do not drain yourself too much!!
you have to look after yourself otherwise what will happen to the donkeys in your care!!
dont end up like Bridget!!!
