Two hours ago, we were wondering whether we needed to take Merlin, our 7 year old (and youngest) cat, to the vet.  He was very quiet, and his breathing was rapid.  He'd been a bit quiet all evening, but quietness seemed to turn to illness very suddenly.

After speaking to the vet, we took Merlin to the hospital, about 5 miles away.  By the time we got there, he was much worse.  The vet explained he had fluid on his lungs - cause unknown - and that he was seriously ill.  They took him away to give him oxygen, etc, and to try and work out what was causing the problem.  They warned us he might not survive.

About 20 minutes ago, the vet rang to say Merlin had passed away.  I hope he didn't suffer too much.  We have to decide whether to have a post mortem, to find out what had happened.  One possible answer is that he had ingested something toxic.

Just a few days ago, he was playing with a live mouse on my bed in the middle of the night!

It just doesn't seem real that he's gone.

Feeling very sad, and wondering if the outcome could have been any different if I'd taken him earlier.

The vet rang with the post mortem results.  Merlin had a condition similar to cardiac myopathy in people, his heart wall had thickened.  His lungs showed that his deterioration had been very sudden, and there was nothing else we could have done for him.

It might be an heriditary condition, so I will contact the old work friend (now working elsewhere) whose cat was Merlin's mum, as she has his two brothers.  The vet said they might be affected, too.

The condition can be seen on a scan - but it is not something routinely checked for.

We miss Merlin's cheeky little face - he was a perennial kitten  :'(!

hello rosemary,

so sorry to hear about merlin's passing. our wee critters leave such big footprints on our hearts and minds. they pattern us to expect to see them and we feel their loss in so many ways.

it sure sounds like merlin had a happy life in his fur-ever home w/ you. i hope your cheerful memories of him will bring you joy as your grief eases.

hug So sorry to hear this - every cat is a special person, Merlin was fortunate to be loved and appreciated. Not every puss is lucky enough to have people who welcome mice on the bed in the small hours, dead or alive ...

At least you know now what the cause was, and that there wasn't anything you could have done.
