This weekend we had great commotion at the Shelter and the two EE adopted donkeys, out of our lot, were under threat, as if by coincidence!

There is a donkey stallion outside the village, and occasionally, he and Gaiato (one of the EE adoptees, a rig) challenge each other vocally.
Well, this weekend the rascal got himself loose  ohmy, went across crop fields, knocked down fences and got into our field. He chased after our donkeys and injured emotionally and physically Rosa, my favourite and gentlest jenny (also EE second adoptee)  angry, as he tried to coax her violently and to submit her into being raped!...  Shocked
Then he tried to mount Gaiato and to flatten him out too.  angry
By this time, our farmer friend heard the noise, and he jumped out of bed. He came to the field and he kept wacking this donkey with a metal iron bar (especially around the… erm… aroused genitals…  Embarrassed), until he cornered him into the shed and was able to lock him. This may sound harsh, but a donkey in sheer vindiction and sexual arousement can be very dangerous...  blink
Then Gaiato took this moment for revenge  devil  and tried to mount him too, once he was tied...  whistle
The owner, a very unpleasant and threatening character, kept threatening us all once we informed him about the damages that his donkey stallion had caused, and he wouldn't collect his animal in a strop... eventually he sent his wife for the donkey...  rant

After match: an injured jenny (he bit her across her fetlock joint, her usual sensitive leg and all  ouch  ), now she is also mentally scarred (she was very shy of the others to begin with)  :'(, and we are both feeling the strain of the last few weeks (chicken dirt, the illnesses, the lack of official support…).

All this happened on Saturday, early hours of the morning. Yesterday, Easter Sunday, soon as I got to the Shelter, I saw Rosa lieing down, as if dead, glazed eyes. She looked as if she had given up... I was in flouds...  :'( Eventually she reacted to us and she raised her head. With great difficulty, Donkey Man and myself, managed to make her stand.
Then I treated her wounds.

Poor Rosa soon after the attack!... in fact, soon after enduring a rape attempt!

He bit her severely across the fetlock joint. In less than 24 hours, despite treating her wounds and giving her anti-inflammatory, her leg became infected and it felt very painful. We had to improvise giving her antibiotic, as our vet was away (Easter weekend…)

The culprit! Grrrrrrrrrrrr!

To make things worse, yesterday we had been invited to attend a religious procession in a rural location that is performed every year on donkey back. I cannot say much about this as yet, but as a result, we may be getting a load of meat donkeys… If we get these donkeys, realistically we'll be in financial dire straits...
I'll be desperate for fund raising ideas, any form of international help. But ethically, how can we turn down animals lives???  :'( :'( :'(

I'm delighted to inform that Rosa is making a good recovery. The antibiotic shots are definately working and she is a placid  angel_not allowing me to treat her fetlock wound.
Rosa is simply  wub wub

Yesterday we opted not to go back to the procession on several ethical grounds.
So, I don't think the organisers will be contacting us, in order to get some of the meat donkeys. I feel sorry for them  :'(, but realistically we are coping as much as we can, and the welfare of our current residents is our upmost priority.

poor Rosa  :'( - only just seen this Maria!
i'm so glad she's recovering well.
hug (((hugs))) to you & D.  what you are doing is so hard - you just can't save the *all*, but what you do makes such a big difference.  too bad you can't get government support!  angry

HI MAria,

Glad that Rosa is improving.

And I am glad you have come to the decision re the other donkeys- as you say, you have to support the ones you already have..  A hard decision, but the right one

Lots of  hug and healing vibes to poor Rosa bless her, what an ordeal  :(

I agree with the others, as awful as it seems, you cannot save them all, especially if it will jeapordise the wellbeing of the ones that you are already helping. Its so sad though.

 hug all round I think.

What an ordeal, poor Rosa :'( I am glad to hear she is recovering well. It is sad about the meat donkeys and as an ethically minded person I am sure you would want to do all you could for them. But sadly, you cannot save them all and it is inevitiable that at some point you will not be able to help some donkeys. That doesn't make you a bad person for turning them away, as there is only so much you can do. Though I can imagine how hard it must be for you :'( Your priority is the donkeys that are in your care and taking on more than you can handle might mean they cannot receive the care they need. It is a sad situation but it would be much worse without the work you are doing. Take care hug

Poor, poor Rosa  :(

I hope she recovers quickly from her ordeal and isn't too traumatised.

I know you must feel sad about the meat donkeys Maria, but you are obviously doing as much as you can with the ones you have, it would be awful to jeopardise it by having too many to care for and feed.

Lots of  hug for you and the donkeys.

Rosa is simply jumping from tragedy into tragedy!  rolleyes

She recovered well from the injuries sustained due to being attacked by a sex maniac stallion...  thumbs

BUT

On Saturday morning, she was found inside a ditch, lying as if dead... she would have slipped down a trail, and rolled into the ditch, because she has stumpy feet and she is rather fat...  Embarrassed
It was a nightmare pulling her out. It took two men and we almost had to call the fire brigade...
Will she ever stop getting into trouble???  Undecided
