About 6.30 yesterday evening we had to take Sheba (one of our 7 year old german shepherds) to the vets, as he had been sick once the previous night and was just a little quieter than usual yesterday morning, but ate without a problem and had no temperature and appeared pretty okay in herself - so we'd gone off to work as usual. I had decided to call via home on the way from work to the yard to find that she had been sick numerous times all over the living room, was exceptionally subdued, breathing slightly heavily and had a slightly swollen stomach - so phoned the vets. They wanted her taking straight down. They weren't quite sure what the problem was - possibly thinking it was something to do with her heart, as her heartbeat was very fast and rather muffled. So they kept her hospitalised on a drip as she was also dehydrated and they were going to run some further tests on her first thing this morning.

Just turned midnight we got a call from the vet to say that she had developed a twisted gut, and that we should decide whether to operate or not and that she would call us back in about 5 minutes when we has had the chance to decide which route to take as her kidneys and liver were also not doing too well, and she was doubtful as to whether or not she would make it through the anesthetic.

However, the decision was made for us as within a couple of minutes the vet rang back to say that she had died. :'(  We have been down to say goodbye and taken her litter mate Tina with us, who I'm sure now realises her sister has gone, even though she will miss her terribly as they were inseparable.

Sorry, if this isn't very coherant as I'm trying to type through the tears.

is a lovely song for you Sheba. R.I.P. my darling

Thanks all

The shock of it, is the hardest part as she's always been a fit and healthy dog.  Tina seems a little more settled tonight and is eating, even though she is quite subdued.

Oh dear I really feel for you :'(  I lost one of my Springers in January.  Similar symptoms but in his case it was a tumour.  It's a dreadful shock when one minute you have a young, healthy, loving friend then suddenly they're ill and then gone.
It may take Tina a little while to come to terms with it :(  My remaining Springer, Freddie, was devoted to his Dad and seemed totally lost for a while but I'm pleased to say he seems happy and exhuberant again now.
Lots of hug hug hug to you all and to Tina.  RIP Sheba.
