My Tonkinese Claude has had a terrible ordeal today, we have been looking after my friends terrier Bertie this weekend as she has been away. He is not used to cats so we have been really careful to keep him away from them, he is crate trained and the cats stayed either upstairs or outside.

This evening the doorbell went (my friend coming to collect Bertie) - I opened the front door and stood next to my friend was Claude - Bertie took one look at him and shot out of the front door in hot pursuit.

Claude shot under a neighbours parked car and Bertie went after him and starting badly ragging him. My friends boyfriend D dashed after them and dragged Bertie out from under the car - he wouldn't let go of Claude, D was hitting Bertie and in the end had to literally prise his jaws open. My friend picked Claude up and gave him to me. I fully expected the worst, I have never seen a dog go for a cat like that.

Claude was hugging me so close and doing that low mewling. We checked him over and found some blood but no obvious wounds. We wrapped him in a towel and I rang the vet and arranged to take him up there. When I put the phone down Claude (who was in DH's arms) went all floppy and his third eyelids came over and he didn't look good.

We rushed him up to the vet and he was purring his head off and looking round in the car. DH was really cross with me for not shutting Bertie away and I feel so bad for being so careless.

We got to the vets and unwrapped Claude (he had been laying in my arms like a baby) and he marched about the table loving the vet (Tonks are soooooo affectionate). She said he has been really lucky, he has a few scrapes from being dragged about but other than that seems fine. She gave him injections of antibiotics and painkiller, and he has to go back tomorrow for a check up.

He's now asleep following a tuna supper, but I thought the famous EE vibes might help!!

Oh poor Claude!

We have terriers and all three chased a yorkie and 'threw' him about pretty badly but luckily he suffered no lasting damage. It really upset me and we have fenced our garden so that the yorkie can no longer visit! They would obviously chase a cat too or indeed any fast moving furry thing and so I'm now very cautious.

Hope Claude is feeling better, always a good sign if they're eating.

Poor chap, how awful for him Shocked. Our two terriers grew up with the cats and are more scared of them than anything else, having had a few boxed ears when puppies!

Heather

nod so are ours Heather, in fact our JRT's are actually smaller than the cats!! Claude and Milo (taken a couple of weeks ago):

Claude still seems pretty stoned this morning from the painkiller (vet said it was like morphine) and is still sleeping on our bed (he's been there all night) - Max our Siamese is cuddled up to him, it was so sweet when Max came in, he seems to know CLaude is not right and has been washing and loving him.

Ironically, we were due to take Claude to the vet this afternoon as, although always having been on the lean side he has dropped weight recently, his breath reeks and he is drinking a lot. Whilst been checked last night vet discovered several of his back teeth are rank so he needs a dental as well as blood tests to check if the weight loss is due to anything else.

Going back to the vets this afternoon, fingers-crossed it's nothing sinister - I'm a bit worried about the drinking loads thing, but Claude is only 4 so not an old cat....

Ahh, hope he feels better soon. hug hug

Might be the tuna that has made him thirsty?  Always has that effect on me.  My cats won't touch the stuff!

I have had two Tonks - they are amazing cats.  Bit like old style Siamese.

Hope he makes a full recovery soon. Smiley

OK, prised Claude off the bed to take him to the vet, it was a chap this time and he checked him over and was horrified when he saw the state of his teeth, he said they are old man's teeth (Claude is only four). I feel really  Undecided for not noticing - you see I had pulled his lips back to see his teeth when his breath started to smell but didn't pull them back far enough as it's his very back teeth. The vet said that whenever he sees really bad teeth in young cats they are nearly alway an Oriental breed.

He also said Claude will be swallowing toxins from the bad teeth which will probably make him feel under the weather.

They took Claude off to take some bloods as they want to check his kidneys/liver/white cell count - please keep fingers-crossed it's nothing sinister as when I asked he said it (the weight loss) is likely to be due to his teeth but it could be kidneys/diabetes/tumour  Shocked  Results back tomorrow.

nod exactly!! Before they got all pointy, wedgy headed. I have a Siamese as well and although not really extreme he is the "new" kind.

Mum has two Tonks (as well as 3 x Siamese and a Burmese) and they really are something else - I'd not have anything else now.

Poor Claude.  You know how I am about orientals!

BTW my vet always compliments my cats teeth an general health: we feed a high percentage of raw food  and chicken drumsticks ate GREAT for teeth!

Interesting about the teeth.  Do yours go out?  I have never managed to persuade myself to live with cat litter trays so all mine out and they catch far too many bunnies - guess it is good for the teeth though.
