Part 6 - She arrives

We went over to her home and she was in the field having a last graze and chill before traveling.  We put travel boots on her and loaded her up in to the lorry and headded to our yard.  She traveled well.

We arrived and put her in her stable so she could have a drink and get used to the smells of her new home.  Her owner was finding good byes a bit hard so she left quite quickly, but txted later to say she was very happy that Beauty had found such a nice home.

We then turned her out in a small field by her self and then let the other three out in the next door field.  They stood and watched her for a while.  Then Flan tried charding at her a few times, but I am pleased to say he got board of that game, then later Softspot came to say hello.  We hope that Beauty and Softspot will be friends and we will try turning them out together on Wednesday.

So she got used to me I walked up to her evey half hour or so and said hello.

We then brought her in, groomed her, rugged her and put her to bed.

Me and Bea at her old home before we loaded:

She traveled really well.

We don't know her:

Why is every one looking over there?:

Who is she?:

Do you think we are going to be friends?:

She is really a lovely horse Rich and of course, I am seriously biased with her being grey!! I see my favourite (and soon to be famous) little spotty friend eyeing up her potential rival too!! laugh

Part 7 - Cold

I went to the yard today after my stage 1 exam.  We have now not had water for 2 days due to it being frozen.  So off to the shop to buy a thing to carry water in and a rug.  She is not clipped but it is so cold I needed to get a warmer rug, we had to borrow one of Softspot's!

Anyway, a big day for Bea, she go turned out with Softspot today and they got on well, which is good.

Once I had mucked out, filled hay nets and made her tea I got her in, then after she had tea we went for a walk to the end of the drive and back, she was very alert, but behaved well.

I hope it warms up soon.

She is gorgeous  wub wub and looks to have settled in to her new home beautifully.

Can I just say what a lovely name "Softspot" is - it just conjures up a really lovely cuddly horse!  Cheesy

Part 8 - The work begins

Well this weekend we started actually working together.  On saturday we did lunging in walk and trot, peacticing transitions between the two.  I then got some poles out, we had to go and sniff them first to make sure they were safe, but after that she went well over them.  She is better on the left rein than right, well to clarify, on the right rein she just wanted to stand next to me rather than go out and be lunged!

On Sunday we had a short lesson in long lining and had a very short go at this.  She is resisting turning a little but I think this is more to do with just not being used to it.  I had done some excersizes from a Bob Mayhew video to help her find a way to turn her head away from a small amount of pressure.  We will continue to do this for a while as it is a very simpe excersize and seems to be of benifit.  The key to the excersize is not to turn (push or pull) the horses head round, but to apply light pressure until she turns and then release and do not keep the presure up this being a simple reward for turning.

Then we went for a walk.  We were fine with the cars, bikes, walkers, dogs and sheep we met, but she did get a little excited when we met other horses.

This morning we did more lunging and long lining and she is already impoving.

As will you be.  Somewhat contraversiall, I think that there is nothing like learning with a young horse.  Of course, Beauty is lucky that you are forward thinking an obviously a caring owner/rider and surrounded by people who have done this before, but you will grow together, and the need to rise to her needs rather than let an older horse put up with any niggles, will be a wonderful oppertunity.

I'm so excited for you. Cheesy hug
