This is a report on our latest arrival at our Donkey Shelter, a much needed rescue.
We were alerted by our local Wolf Recovery Centre that an old donkey had just been offered by her owner as live feed for the wolves  :(. The staff who work there, were very sensitive and they passed us the contact of the donkey’s owner  hug.

We didn’t have a minute to loose, in case the man changed his mind and sent the donkey to a meat merchant instead. So, we went to see her… we were told that she was old and a bit on thin side, but not much…  angry

We parked the car and we walked across the fields to get to this donkey, out in a large paddock, amidst rumble and lots of barking dogs, all tied with chains.  ohmy

Apparently she was fine; she had a nylon rope halter, tethered by a long rope to a stone, to prevent her from running off far. She saw us, and she came towards us… and as she approached, her smell was sickening…    sick01 and then we saw how hurt she really was. The rope halter, over the months, under the strain of dragging the stone to move around, caused friction on the poll and it cut into the flesh, at least 2”-3”, as these photos show.

There was signs of infection and the smell simply unbeareable.  sick
Despite in pain, the donkey kept following us as if recognising in us her saviours…  :'(

We came back later that day to treat her. She stood still, like a brave soldier. We removed the headcollar off the cut, disinfected it and applied an antibiotic cream and spray. Our vet wasn’t available (Bank Holiday  rolleyes), so we had to do all the work ourselves.

Shortly after, a man came along, a friend of the owner, oblivious of the animal’s condition and suffering. But for the donkey’s sake, we had to keep polite and show a nonchallant attitude!
Lips Sealed He then kindly offered to give us a lift back to our car… he told us that he worked at a pig processing factory; his livelihood is killing… pigs as a job, ox as a weekend favour for friends, hunting as a hobby…  censored We were dropped off by a sausage factory, and by now animals were being slaughtered… we had to walk a few yards back to my car, amidst the chilling cries of pain and terror…  :'(
As you may imagine, this was a traumatising experience to me, as a vegetarian and I had to revert to my Reiki Mantras to ease the anguish that I was feeling and to baffle the screams in my ears… I just wanted to ran off as quick as possible...

The next day we went back to treat the donkey. The old lady looked weak and feable, but yet, she stood, while we treated her.
You can see how weak and sick she looked…

But the wound seemed to be healing well!  thumbs

Then we had to face another problem… how to get her out of there, as we have no trailer, and with the expenses of the daily running of the Shelter, we cannot afford a trailer… Eventually, a local person kindly offered to arrange transport (a van also used to take horses to their final destination…).
The donkey was so weak that a 5 minute loading job took hours!

On arrival, we opened the door and she had collapsed. She was too weak to stand on her feet and to find balance.

Several attempts were made… none proved fructuous…

In the end, we had to resort to drag her and then to make her stand on her feet. I had to hold her head high, so that she got some balance…
She was so frail… her head felt like the heaviest part of her body. :'(

On her feet, she had to be pushed from behind, in order to walk up the drive way into her new home…

But there was a good sign. On seeing the fresh grass, she munched a bit. There is hope, I think…  Smiley

Just as a final word.
The people looking after her told us that she looked so weak this morning that they thought she wouldn't make it... but she is fighting back! Please keep your fingers crossed, she needs all the vibes she can get right now

In a face of a case like this, I keep thinking 'I wish God could stretch his Hand of Mercy and stop all creatures from suffering'...  :'(

We are running a very small Donkey Shelter and we hardly have no means.
The generosity of EE members so far as been our main (and at times sole) life line  hug hug... since December that our feed, our hay, vet bills have been covered by the adoptions and donations from EE members.  Cheesy
But in order to carry on bringing some effective support to animals like this one, we must keep raising funds and at the moment the purchase of a small second-hand trailer is paramount.

Would anybody like to 'adopt' Judite?

oh these pics and your story broke my heart  :'( it is good to hear this old girl is now in a safe environment - even if she only has days left she'll have beautiful days w/ people who care.

i can understand owners sending their horses to zoos as feed once they are dead but i've never heard of anyone donating 'live feed' to wolves or other predators. the cruelty  is beyond my understanding.

on the upside the men in the pics are such heroes - please send a huge thanks to them.

:'( :'(Poor little donkey, bless her heart, what she must have been through in her life, and her final thanks to be thrown to the wolves. Just what the hell is wrong with some people? How does anyone become so completely devoid of any compassion? It's just beyond me.

How can they leave her with a rope cutting into her neck like that?  rant rant rant

I really hope she makes it, she deserves to have some happy years, where she's treated with kindness.

Well done Maria hug hug hug

Manuela,
we'd be very grateful if you could spread the word around; we really need support from every single corner of the world.  hug

We are currently making our own website, although still under construction and still just in Portuguese language. Soon, it will be also in English and it will include more information.
The address is as follows:
www.burricadas.org

All donations and donkey adoptions can be sent to our PayPal account:
burricadas@sapo.pt

If anybody wishes to adopt one of our donkeys, please pm me and state your preference. I can post a list of donkeys, as well as Judite.

Yvonne,
you have also been one of the Hands of Mercy, who has done so much for us.  hug

Please everybody, all support is vital. Please pass the word around...

My sister will also adopt her! And she's trying to convince all the men at her work that their loved one would love an unusual gift for Valentines Day!

Hi Maria,

I have a list of about 20 people that I am putting together that I think would be happy to help out. I would like to send them this post with the photos and your narrative. Can  I cut and paste this? Or, could you send it to me as an email. Then I can attach it with my letter. I am sure you will get a positive response. This really is heartbreaking.
My daughter Rosie is asking a friend to adopt another donkey with her. They are going to sell horse cookies to make the money themselves. We have done the same for local rescue organizations and one of our horses is an SPCA case that I handled two years ago. I feel it is important to address the issues of abuse in our own area as well as reach out to animals far away. You have made it very easy for us to help....so thank you
