Magical unicorns forever! www.iberianahorse.com

To whom it may concern, all the EE wonderful people who adopted one of our donkeys, here are their descriptions.
[I'll be adding Augustus picture shortly too.  nod]

In the meantime, please let me know which is your choice of adoption, so that we start preparing the adoption packs and we know!  wink

Flôr (Flower)
Flor arrived at the Shelter in March 2007, rescued from a cattle trader. One of her hooves was so over grown that she could barely walk, and she presented an acute infection in one of her legs, as well as the fact that she was under nourished, having thrived just on the weeds in a dry, over crowded paddock, where she was kept together with other animals, handled violently by her keepers.
At this precise time, after intensive and lengthy veterinary care, this jenny lives happily in the Shelter together with her friends, although her locomotion is limited, due to the sustained injuries.
Flor is around 18 years old, a strong character that stands out in the crowd.

Gaiato (Kid)
Gaiato arrived at the Shelter in August 2007, bought off a local farmer.
He worked hard on daily basis, used in all kinds of agricultural hard tasks, namely pulling the cart, ploughing and thrashing, and carrying heavy loads on his back. Such a hard work life caused him severe conformational problems, like a very saggy back.
He currently lives at the Shelter, together with the remaining donkeys, clearly assuming a lead role.
Gaiato must be around 20 years old, a strong but gentle character, although the way how he was handled in the past still made him suspicious of people.

Galé (Galley)
Galé was our first donkey, arriving in January 2007, removed from a restaurant, where was she a simple decoration gadget. Prior she would have been used in agriculture as a beast of burden.
When she arrived, she sustained a chronic tendon condition in one of her feet, the result of several years of negligence with her hooves. Her elderly age is also causing her bone problems, such as arthritis.
She is about 30 years old, a true character, although such a gentle donkey, a favourite amongst the children. We are planning to retire her very soon, so that she can spend the rest of her life together with her friends.

Bolota (Haycorn)
Bolota, alongside her daughter Amora (Blackberry), was a resident donkey at the current loaned facilities. Very timid due to her limited contact with humans, she is becoming increasingly confident, and she is now well established in the group of donkeys.
This donkey had been a gift from the farmer to his young son years ago, and the love of the child spared her from being used in the farm works.
Although over 20 years old, she enjoys good health and her vitality is remarkable, even amongst younger animals.

Amora (Blackberry)
Just like her mother Bolota, Amora (Blackberry), was a resident donkey at the current loaned facilities. Very timid due to her limited contact with humans, she is becoming increasingly confident, and she is now well established in the group of donkeys.
She is around 18 years old, still very attached to her mother, whom she follows everywhere.

Avelã (Hazelnut)

Avelã arrived at the Shelter in March 2007, together with his friend Duende.
He was born in the far northeast of the Trás-Os-Montes province, one of the eighty births of his breed, registered in 2006.
Because he is so young, he is still developing his personality and he is revealing himself as a very docile and sweet animal.
He is one of the few specimens of Portugal’s only native breed of donkeys and he is at the Association for the promotion of the breed.

Duende (Elf)
Duende arrived at the Shelter in March 2007, together with his friend Avelã.
He was born in the far northeast of the Trás-Os-Montes province, one of the eighty births of his breed, registered in 2006.
This is the most inquisitive and clever donkey currently in the shelter, a little creature full of personality, full of antics. He soon rule the group.
He is one of the few specimens of Portugal’s only native breed of donkeys and he is at the Association for the promotion of the breed.

Cacau (Cocoa)
Cacau is a very attractive and robust Miranda donkey, elected as one of the best male donkeys of his breed, born in 2006. He is destined to be used as a stallion, to serve jennies of his breed in the centre and south parts of the country.
He is a powerful donkey, yet very friendly and inquisitive, a pleasure to be around.
This is one of the few specimens of this Portuguese native breed of donkeys.

Augusto (Augustus)
A contrast to Bolota, this donkey was a present from son to father.
After a hard life working in rural tasks, he now spends his days together with Galé at his new home. His overall condition is improved; trimmed hooves, de-wormed and living in an ample new paddock.
He takes part in activities with children and in trails with the tourists, as a means to promote the work conducted by the Shelter with the general public.

Needless to say, anybody else wishing to adopt one of these donkeys, please pm me or simply post your adoption to the Shelter's PayPal account:
burricadas@sapo.pt
Adoptions £20 / 30€.

The adoptions received so far have proved vital. They went towards the last outstanding vet bill (vaccinations, de-wormers, vitamins) and a month's hay and feed supply.  thumbs

They all sound so worthy - I think I may have to go for Augustus - only because I was born in August Smiley

He is a rascal and soon, unless we sell the Miranda babies soon, we'll have to come to the decision of gelding them!  :(
They are getting very hormonal, especially Duende! :Smiley

Hi Maria,

I haven't been able to keep up with the forum, but I did read this and wanted to say hi to you and send you a big hug for doing all this work for the donkeys!  My daughters and I would like to adopt Gale in honour of her age and as a sister in spirit to our 34 year old mare. We will support her for as long as she lives. This is a present we are giving to ourselves for Christmas
