Cel, my beloved collie, was put to sleep today at 12.34pm.
He had developed a septic hygroma that was not responding sufficiently to a second course of anti-biotics or the plethora of other treatments he was receiving. This, on top of his rapidly degenerating heart condition and the arthritis  (the latter of which was being well contained homeopathically) was just too much and he became a shadow of his former self in a matter of hours.
The decision to euthanise was excruciatingly difficult as he was still quite perky, but all quality of life had gone and enough was enough.
He was a truly amazing friend, words fail me in description.
He leaves a heartbroken family behind.

I hope they have lots of squeaky balls and cake where he is now.

Thank you.

It was truly the hardest decision I have ever had to make. With other animals by the time we'd got to that point they were already mostly gone, but Cel was struggling to stay with us until the very end. He gave me such a  look......
Even the vet had been briefly undecided because he'd won through so many impossible situations before that he was already a miracle, he'd had 18 months longer than should have been possible, but the medication and willpower were the only things keeping him standing by yesterday and he was having immense difficulty even doing that. He was trying to wait for the postman to come (who was late) outside but the pain he was in was excruciatingly evident, and I had promised him that I wouldn't let him suffer.
The vet asked him what he wanted to do and he walked away from us and looked at the start of his hole which numerous friends had come and helped dig in preparation. Never seen a vet almost cry before.
So that was the decision made.
Minutes later the postman came.......... :'( :'( :'( :'(

What a fabulous boy you had. So, so sorry for what must have been one of your hardest days. I think you did your boy proud though.
