Gregory lost his battle with pneumonia this afternoon.  I've been injecting him furiously for three days, the vet said the first 24 hours would be make or break so he proved himself a real fighter.

Gregory was a handsome bird and a wonderful, wonderful rooster, kind and gentle with people and unfailingly attentive to his wives and children.  This afternoon he wanted to come out of the house so we let him sit in the sun and fed him doughnuts: one of his favourite foods. We thought he was winning the battle but I just went out to give him the jab and he had just gone.

I've never known a rooster so gentle.

He leaves behind his flock of film stars (no puns) but Rita Heyworth, Hedi Lamarr, Ginger Rodgers, etc etc..

this generation my pheasant hybrid is Calister Flockhart (another pun) but now we need a rooster name.  I've always wanted a Bertie Wooster, but it seems to obvious....

One of our lovely gardener's dug the hole for me.  He has been very sweet about Greg's 'place of rest' and said even he will miss him and that he was a big presence.  :'(
