 Tried using a pelham on my boy, and all he did was set his jaw, no amount of persuasion would get him to soften, so in desparation i put him in a loose ring french link sweet iron bit, and he softens, but only at halt!!! see other post
I don;t use a great amount of sqeeze for his jaw to soften, would this suggest that he has got an even more sensitive mouth than I orginally thought? :(

Hi Joy! My mare seems to respond better to vibrating the rein rather than squeezing. My biggest mistake is asking her to soften with my hand without backing up the request with leg. For example, if I ask her to halt by vibrating the rein and stopping my seat, she stops with her head up and her hindquarters behind. If I vibrate BOTH reins, stop my seat, AND squeeze with both legs, she stops square and in frame. I'm using a loose ring french link (14 mm mouth).
Good luck! Karen
