Shoulder In Query
«

Something came up today while I was teaching Shoulder in. Its occurred before and I wasn't sure of the answer.
Advancing the outside seatbone and turning the shoulders makes it easy for the horse to go into shoulder in and this certainly works, however the query is:
with the outside seatbone forwards how does one keep the outside leg behind the girth ?
There is bound to be a simple explanation but I'm being thick and can't see it.
Any help appreciated!

Hi Nick!
It is the one time that I feel the leg has to be used a little from the knee down- i.e you need to bring the leg back from the knee further than the hip- it can still be done unobtrusively, and really becomes less and less necessary as the horse becomes more familiar with the exercise,I find that just advancing the outside hip and using the inside leg at the girth is sufficient.
Hope this helps-
Heather

Thanks Heather,
This does make sense. In fact it's something that I think I do myself automatically. However when someone asked and I analysed it I confused
myself!!
Thanks again
Nick

Thank you for this tip. I will try it out tomorrow when I have my next lesson.
