Well done for making the call Flashback. I hope the RSPCA came over the weekend, I'm sure you'll tell us.
You would now be well advised to keep a low profile to avoid them treating you like they treat little project. Let the RSPCA do their job, I just hope the owners don't hoodwink them.
Waiting for an update on this poor little guy.

well, what can i say ............ got call from rspca this morning, wanting more info, which of course i gave, and asking what i was expecting of him!! i said i would like her to be given a chance to put things right management-wise and for little project to be taken away from her if she didnt! .. apparently they cant do that if the horse has been seen by a vet .... even tho she is not following his instructions...... can u believe that??????? :(
owner was there at lunchtime ... farrier visit .......... i couldnt really hang around without it looking obvious! and id cleaned my tack to waste a bit of time!
got a call later this afternoon from rspca bloke ........ he'd seen her, seen horse running around the field and thought he looked ok cos her was cantering! i explained, very patiently, that the reason why vets use walk and trot to assess lameness was that 99% of lameness' were unidentifiable at the canter! ........ he'd believed her story about the vet ........ dont think he even saw little project up close, let alone without a rug!
got told by owner they are to go out tomoro with rugs on regardless of the weather! ............. she thinks someone saw him from the road!!!!!!!! that part of the plan worked!!!!!!
so what now??????????????????????????????????????????

I have been following your story and can quite believe the rspca are not responding in the way we would all like (seen it before) . Don't give up, try a dedicated horse charity - they know what they are looking at - even a smaller local one if not the ilph. This has really sickened me to my stomach and I really hope you can hang in there to help this little chap.

thanks!
there is one very close by ............ unfortunately whilst they are pretty good with small round ponies i dont think it wise (having worked for them in the past!!!!!) to get them involved! he would certainly be managed better but they have no-one capable of riding him! ............ well, if you pay peanuts ..................... !
it looks as though i will have to phone the ILPH ..............

Hi Flashback
Have to admit I was waiting to hear what the RSPCA said. I bought my last horse off a girl that had bought him as a 3 yr old - quite apart from the rough riding I saw her mete out, he was a typical, chunky irish horse. Then she got into the polo crowd and decided that's what she wanted - when she could be bothered that was. As such little horse was fully clipped, hogged, half starved to make him look finer and only taken out of the stable for fast hacks on the roads - about once a week at most from what I saw. :( All this with no bedding, I used to find droppings in the water (if he had any), no attention to his feet (shoes left off) and very very little food. This went on for over 6 months with me visiting whenever I was home from school and try to help him out.
The RSPCA were called out (not by me, unfortunately) but because he was clipped and had a (dirty smelly inadequate) rug on he was "obviously fine".
I was finally able to persuade my parents to go halves with me on buying him, aged 5. He always had feet spread out like dinner plates and I spent literally hours boiling linseed etc to put weight on safely (this was 1990 so I don't remember there being as many options as there are now). He was a smashing little horse, fantastic hacking/cross country and always so kind despite living with her for 2 years. Far more than any human deserved.
My opinion of the RSPCA however was severly dented then - and remains so today. Good luck with having more success elsewhere, I'm rooting for you.

phone Equine Market Watch, they may be able to help. Phone ILPH, keep on at the RSPCA and do contact your local equine rescue place, you may be able to help them....

I've finally been moved to join in this thread....
Flash, I know how you feel watching someone mistreating a horse that is out of your control - it just boils your blood doesn't it
. Be brave, there will always be some that you just can't help, no matter how much you want to. It will always break your heart but at least you can sleep at night knowing that you've tried your very best and that your horses are living the best possible lives they can,
As for the RSPCA, they actually have very little in the way of powers to do anything legally. Unless they can prove that the horse is suffering fairly majorly, they can't do a thing, and in the legal sense, "suffering" has to mean "will die" if left. As Little Project has company, is being fed, has water, and can move then the law doesn't allow any intervention from the charity (afterall, that's all it really is). I know that we all know he is in desperate pain and isn't being looked after in the way he should, that's not how the law sees it. (and as we all know, the law is an ass! :P ). So, please do try the ILPH and anyone else you can think of, but don't be too disappointed if they don't do anything. All we can realistically hope for is that the repeated interest from various welfare charities will guilt trip the owners into doing something about the poor little blighter.
Good luck Flash and be brave, I'm keeping Little Project in my thoughts (and I have very powerful thoughts you know!) and wishing for a healthy resolution to all this.

This is sickening.
Don't be too quick to scorn the smaller charities though, many now have staff who are highly experienced and would be well able to cope with him. It depends where you ask - I know of one which has help from Mark Hudson (I think?) who is supposed to be quite good.

Sorry to hear things have not improved - I have almost been too nervous to check! It really takes guts to watch this sort of thing and be so helpless but as was said before keep on at those bodies which can help you may just get there in the end. Those horses are very lucky to have you to give them cuddles at the very least. We are all rooting for you and behind you in spirit if nothing else.

awww this is just awful. Flashback I really admire you for not doing an impression of the Tasmanian Devil cos I'm sure I would have done something unmentionable to the owners by now.
They really dont deserve to own ANY living thing - let alone a poor horse that really hasn't had the best start in life at all. Oh to win the lottery and have lots of money to stop people like these.
Keep us updated please.
