I have ridden for years in an Albion Legend flair.  I had no hip problems.  Recently I purchased a Custom Saddle wiht a short seat, and in fifteen minutes I was in agony, as my  hips were killing me.  I don't have tight hips, quite the opposite, as I can do a chinese split.
I have a Fhoenix on trial and on my first ride (where my stirrups were a litttle too long) my hips started to hurt after riding my horse at the walk for a half hour.  I shortened the stirrups (too short) and rode a different horse at the walk and trot with no problem, no pain.
Are there adjustments that can minimize this issue, but also what causes it.  The pain in the fhoenix, was just annoying, the pain in the treed saddle was a deal breaker.  Thanks.

I don't have any real knowledge of the subject, just personal observation  :P , but ...

I believe that for me it has something to do with the width of the saddle/twist combined with set back stirrup bars.  I have no problem with set back bars if the saddle has a narrow twist or if the horse is not too wide when riding treeless without a twist, and I have no problem with the width of the saddle/horse if I can ride in a chair seat, but put the two together (set back bars/wide saddle or horse) and I'm in trouble.

Same for me.  I don't have a twinge on my Dartmoor with Heathers hipsaver on it but without it I'm in agony.
Strange that you had hip pain with the Fhoenix.  I'm really stiff but had no pain at all in that saddle.  I tried GP version.

Try a hip saver on top of the Fhoenix?

I was riding a horse who has some pain issues himself when I had the pain.
I'm a bit of an empath, so maybe that was a small factor.
I shortened the leathers, rode a different horse, and did some sitting and posting trot (on frozen ground) and didn't have any pain at all.  The leathers were too short.
The flap is too long for me, as it hits the top of my paddock boot, I don't know if this is  a player.  I would rather not add any material to diminish my feel of the horse.  Today I'll ride with leathers the correct length, I hope, and tomorrow with the suberpanel.
Do the placements of the kneeroll affect the hips adversely?  Someone I know who had hip issues was told to ride without them.  THanks
