Any ideas? War Cry is a tiny little dude, with a very short back (it just fits my arse) and a small girth groove with barely any space behind his elbow - so, to prevent him getting irritated or sore, can anybody recommend a good girth that might suit us?

I'm thinking of a balding type thing (I think it's a balding? huh ) that has a thinner curve behind the elbow, but can one get these with elastic buckle straps?

townfield saddlery make me atherstone ones with double ended elastic to order - think they are about £40 Townfilds girths

if you need a short dressage one and are feeling flush amerigo have a gorgeous one! jaguar and albion have nice ones too!
amerigo girth

If you look up shaped girth or anatomical girth (as well as atherstone or balding (that has 3 strands of leather)) on ebay you should find something to suit!

Thank you both very much! A 48" would be way too big for my little mustang, but thank you for the offer  Smiley

I'll have a good flick through those websites (and others now that I know the name! Balding? Why did I say balding??  rolleyes ).

Balding girths are shaped to be narrower at the elbow also.  They are the ones where the leather is split into three and plaited behind the elbow.

I have a shaped leather girth and it does rub my pony. It is one that is supposed not to rub but it does. I've had to put a neophane sleeve over it.

What you might want to look into are the odd-shaped County girths that lie closer to the front legs underneath the belly, but then come up towards the back so that they avoid the elbow.  They're pricey, but probably well worth it.  I wouldn't go for anything short as that will rub his elbows more, methinks!

I'm really happy with my 'shaped' Wintec Pro - it narrows down behind the elbows, and has elastic both ends... or in the middle (can't really tell from looking at it!).  See a picture on www.tackshop.co.nz under girths, but not sure if they ship o'seas (are a kiwi company).

My IDx has her girthgroove tight up behind her elbow. I did have her in an Atherston with elastic one end and it didn't rub as much as any of the others had, incl Cottage Craft. Then when I got the Wintec2000 package for the new girl. It came with a squidgy Wintec girth with a tad of overall stretch like the skin below it, and puffy rounded edges like a soft 3-fold, .....well now I have nothing BUT Wintecs all round! No rubs since. And they're cheap!

Oooh - I really like the look of the Wintec one! Strangely though I can't find it on their website, but should be able to find it online over this side of the world. Thanks!

They are dressage girths though, not sure if you wanted a full or dressage length girth?

At the moment I need a full length. I assume the Wintec *is* a full length one

Heya,

My old boy has a very forward girth groove and has caused serious problems over the years. He was ok in atherstone shaped long girths, the aerborn type ones - but I'm not sure they make then now!

But in a dressage girth he's terrible - after a lot of trial and mostly error I settled on the leather amerigo one as above - it was good but I didn't get to reall test it as all my tack got nicked!! I tried a normal aerborn dressage girth in a numed girth sleeve and he still rubbed up, and the saddle came forward (Fitform and Fhoenix) however I then got an neoprene banana shaped girth off ebay, about £35, and use it in the numed sleeve and its brilliant! Good on both mine actually and I really really rate it, for stability, comfort etc. It is elasticated at both ends. You can get longer non-dressage versions certainally in leather.
