Hello

Can anyone tell me how the actions differ between rugby pelhams and fixed sided pelhams. I'm planning to go to a fun ride an May, I've never taken my Tess to anything like this so i was going to buy a pelham and use two reins to that i have an emergancy break so to speak if the snaffle loses its effectiveness in the heat of the moment.

Also i have read that you are meant to put a sliphead on a rubgy pelham so make it looks like a double bridle, does anyone have a photo of this?

Hi Alexa,

Wouldnt bother with a rugby pelham- only really used for showing. Some horses want to fiddle with the loose ring too which can be annoying. A plain mullen mouth SS bit, with an elastic curb chain which is much milder but still very effective. Read my book for how to use it!!

If you don't use a slip head with a rugby pelham the snaffle rings just hang and move around a lot. I used to use one when I showed Pi as a working cob, he went very nicely in it.

However for everything else requiring brakes I use a plain fixed sided, little port pelham.  I'd give it a try first and make sure it does the job.
