Thanks all, so many fantastic suggestions!  I think I'll forego the Christmas present shopping and buy my bodyweight in new novels instead

Oh could I forget?

The last book by Mark Rashid. Highly recommanded, there are stories about his work on ranches. Just a great easy read, so soothing for the soul  B)

I'll second the Secret life of bees, very good and a shorter easier read.
I've also just picked up The Virgins lover by Phillipa Gregory.  More of a fictional story based off of history.  Also good by Phillipa Gregory is The Other Boleyn Girl.

Another vote for the Pullman trilogy, it ranks in my all time top ten  Cheesy
If you like fantasy Stephen Donaldson or Gene Wolfe are IMO not to be missed.
Ian Rankin if you like 'crime writers'.
 Robertson Davies is another favourite
Peter James and Clive Barker .....i could go on and on

and me, its fab!

Also love the Garth Nix books if you like fantasy stuff! Jodie Picault is great too and I am just reading "the time travelers wife!"

Working in a school I am the queen of chidrens book! Most are nice easy readers though:-

William Nicholson is great, he has written 2 trilogies
Eva Ibotsons longer books are very entertaining
Cornelia funke has started a trilogy, the first 2 are Inkheart and Inkworld
and don't forget you have to read Eldest and Eragorn before the film comes out!  They are great! Cheesy

"the boy in the striped pyjamas" is a must, its nothing like you expect but.....!

If you want horsey, have you read "Wid Horse Diary" its fantastic!

OMG I could go on forever paperbag

I second these choices....looks like you and i have the same taste jackfrost! Life of Pi is possibly my favourite book.

I started reading another Yann Martell book on holiday called Self, which i have never got round to finishing....only because other stuff gets in the way, so hopefully will get to finish it during x-mas holidays.

We need to do a similar thread for film recomendations, i always seem to pick up rubbish DVD's these days. Need some good viewing for my time off too!

Horse sense - something that horses have that stops them betting on humans.

In my opinion, a horse is the animal to have. 1100 pounds of raw muscle, power, grace, and sweat between your legs - it's something you just can't get from a pet hamster.
