I just can't get into learning, horsey book mode.  Must be the time of year and lack of a suitable mount (careful!) in order to put theory into practice.  My brain has enough learning to do at work, am very much in escapism mode!

So, has anyone a good fiction recommendation for me?  Nothing spooky/scary/supernatural as I'm scared of the dark

GREAT TOPIC!!!!

i am always always looking for good books to read! (non horsey)

i recently read a fabulous book, The Grass Dancer by Susan Power.  a Native American Indian story/subject, a VERY good read.

i was also very taken with Phillip Pullman's Amber Spyglass trilogy.

i can highly recommend anything by Barbara Kingsolver, another Native American author!

i'm going to bookmark this page for future reference!!!!  thanks again

I've read the Time Traveller's Wife & The Curious Incident of the Dog in The Night-Time, but thank you for suggesting them as they are fabulous.  Other recent reads are A Short History of Tractors in the Ukrania (couldn't finish it!) as well as The Penguin Novels (found this a rather difficult read), Atomised and I'm reading (for the second time) Don't Tell Mum I Work on the Rigs, She Thinks I'm A Piano Player in a W****house as it's hilarious Cheesy

I've read all these in the past month or two and have run out of inspiration for anything else.

Am reading about all the suggestions so far on Amazon, thankies  Smiley

I'm reading the Black Magician trilogy by Trudi Canavan.  I'm finding them very addictive and I'm nearly finished the second book now (after starting the first one last night!)

However if you want real escapism (in an action adventure Indiana Jones / Mission Impossible type way) I'd recommend Matthew Reilly or James Rollins

Depends how easy a read you want?

What with all the academic books and bloomin journal articles flying round here at the moment, I am into SERIOUSLY easy reading, if it hasn't hooked me in the first sentance then its outa there!

Anything by Marian Keyes (girlie holiday romance rubbish but funny and easy!)

Anything by Anita Shreve (girlie romance, not as light as MK - good characters - best one The Last Time They Met - good twist!)

Anything by Douglas Kennedy - best recent ones The Dead Heart and The Big Picture - thrillers, but not too heavy or dark and very witty.

Anything by Peter James - for more scary gory thrillers, but they are all based on the same theme, so don't read more than one in a row - best recent one Twilight.

Ditto His Dark Materials, (Philip Pullman) fabby trilogy!!  And soon to be a film with Daniel Craig (new James Bond) yum!!! So needs to be read before the film comes out or you won't be able to sit there and say - that's not as good as the book....    wink

I love anything by Jodi Picoult - have read nearly all of hers, "My Sister's Keeper" & "Mercy" being the best, they are usually very thought provoking.

Also, Nicci French - again have read all of theirs (it's a husband/wife team) - they are UK set crime novels and unputdownable.

Sarah Dunant is good too.

Marian Keyes is great for total mindless chick-lit with laugh-out-loud bit's - one of my favourites is "Rachels' Holiday".

HTH!!
