I have put this post in rider training, as I guess that it is my problem more than my pony's problem!

I am having real trouble getting her to work in a consistent outline. She first started offering me an outline about 18months - 2yrs ago. It was very ropey at first but has improved. She is now swinging through her back, tracking up, and relaxing through her neck and jaw...most of the time! The trouble I have is that she does not stay there for very long! She will gradually bring her head and neck up, but continue to move forwards.

I have had her back, saddle and teeth done, so i don't *think* it is a pain issue. At first I didn't expect much, as I knew she had to develop the muscle to carry herself, but I think two years is long enough to develop some topline! She works well (and more consistently) in a pessoa on the lunge, so I am thinking it must be something I am doing that is stopping her from maintaining her shape.

I would love to go on one of heather's simulator courses, but as a poor uni student I can't afford it (plus will be working in the NHS when i qualify so i can't afford to get debts!!!!!). I have had lessons in the past, but am currently in-between instructors, but these lessons have never really addressed this issue.

Any ideas anyone? Or does anyone know any decent instructors in the area around Bishop's Stortford on the Herts/Essex border? Thanks!

I find that I can sabotage Toby's way of going and outline by not giving with the inside rein, its more like Ill drop it lower and move my hand back. If she is doing all the good things you are saying, I would say it is some riding habit like mine that actually prevents the horse from going correctly, do you keep your focus and position once she is going well or do you relax and it falls apart?. Can you post a video or get a friend to give you some feedback?

You might have to take what she will give you and right before you start to see deterioration in her collection drop back to a walk or whereever you don't need as much collection then take it again.  Gradualy you should be able to go longer and longer in a correct outline.  It might just be a learning curve that she is going through and needs a refresher course.
